Hello...I was a Pi Phi at Drake and was extremely upset when I received the letter from National stating that the chapter would be closing about 10 years after graduating.
My sisters and I worked very hard to make Pi Beta Phi a competitive and sought after house at Drake, my first recruitment as an active - was that first year we made quota. And it was an amazing pledge class - we took girls preffed by the two "top" houses. Pi Phi was still fairly new at Drake during that time. We also had some very amazing ladies that were part of the colonization and served as AAC.
In addition, Des Moines - has one of the organization's strongest and most active alumnae groups - so this was a blow to all of us.
Apparently, according to my "letter" - there were some ongoing financial issues but the main reason given was due to a "very serious incident" that had occurred. None of us were ever given any further details. 2012 is the year that Drake holds it's annual Greek Reunion...it is so sad not to have a house to go back to. I had hoped to have a new "Pi Phi" house to spoil - my daughter completed recruitment at the University of Alabama in the Fall but that was not in the cards either. Sadly, I'm feeling quite disconnected by it all right now.
I love my Iowa Eta Pi Phi sisters but Pi Beta Phi, the sisterhood I have been so proud and honored to be a part of, has broken my heart twice now.
Part of the reason why I joined this forum is that I feel there is a kinship and sincere feeling of sisterhood among all of the members irregardless of what actual house they are affiliated with. It is a really lovely community and much needed, after all, in the world of higher education - Greeks are the minority. We need to be positive and strong for the sake of all our alma maters.
