Badge & Guard

I was looking at Chi Omega items on eBay and noticed this Chi Omega badge from Lambda Beta Chapter. (Don't we have a regular Lambda Beta poster -- is it Kelly?) Anyway, I was looking at the picture and noticed that the chapter guard seems to be attached on the opposite side of the pin from where my guard was. It's been a few years since I've had the guard on mine, so maybe I'm crazy!

You are right! The dangle is on the wrong side of the pin. I looked carefully cuz at first I thought maybe the picture had been developed backwards - but it wasn't.

It looks as if it was attatched that way. I'll have to look at mine to see if you CAN attatch it to either side, or if the "o" ring was put there by a jeweler (like maybe she had it fixed at one time and the jeweler didn't know what side it was supposed to go on).

Wow, that pin is old....I will email Lambda Beta's current GH to see if the name matches up in the roll book. The only number I don't understand is the "6697" (we were founded in 1922, our membership numbers don't even go up that high now). Perhaps a birthday?

I think I will have to bid on that one.....

Newbie jumping in

Hi everyone - had to comment here...I hope I XO wins this auction! My badge is very special to me and I'd hate to think that anyone could just pick one up online. Although I guess it probably happens all the time.

Maybe because the pin is so old the guard is on the "wrong" side? Did they generally offer guards in the 20's? I'm thinking they didn't and this person had it added on later?

On that note - Do most of you alums keep your guard on? I still have mine on, but I'm not sure of "proper" alum badge ettiquette?

Also, I'd really love to get a silver badge as I have a lot more silver jewlery, but I have an attachment to "my" badge. Anyonw else feel this way?

Hello ladies,

"LOS, Inc." is not one of the common GLO badge manufacturers, so it makes sense that this would not be the "usual design" of Chi Omega badge.

As for 6697, Chi Omega would have had about that many initiates in 1925, so I would guess it's her intiation number.

Guard

I actually never got a guard for my pin. I had to go alum right after I was initiated, thanks to scholarship problems, etc. I've always wanted one but never knew if I could get one and wear it as an alum...

I think guards have been around a long time -- some were not Greek letters representing the local chapter, but were the Chi Omega crest. The guard is not only decorative, but actually serves the purpose of protecting the badge if it comes un-hooked.

On that note - Do most of you alums keep your guard on? I still have mine on, but I'm not sure of "proper" alum badge ettiquette?
I think it's certainly fine to keep the guard as long as you like -- it's personal preference. Years ago the Governing Council stated that an alumna could wear the badge on a ring or pendant -- or on the collar of a suit or dress (unlike collegians who must wear it only over their heart). Obviously, if your badge is on a ring -- the guard would have to go!

Most of the time you will notice that National Representatives no longer wear a chapter guard on the badge, since they kinda now "belong" to all chapters.

Also, I'd really love to get a silver badge as I have a lot more silver jewlery, but I have an attachment to "my" badge. Anyonw else feel this way?
When I bought the ring for my badge and began wearing it daily...I sent my pin to the jeweler (Burr Patterson & Auld) and had the pearls replaced with diamonds.

Chi Omega has had 3 different "official" jewelers since I've been a member -- no telling who was manufacturing the badges in 1925. Some of the early badges have no "maker's mark" on them.

My best friend's fiancee is a jeweler and I'm going to see if he can get me some wholesale diamonds to put into my badge. I love the pearls, but LOVE diamonds more

I dunno, I didn't talk to that bidder, but he/she had purchased owl stuff previously so I'm thinking they are "family!?"

I hope she's "family"! It's easy to see how a deal like Ebay would cost Nationals a lot of money if they were to form a Badge Recovery Program (like some of the other Nationals have). I've seen some badges get into the $100s and for me, that's money I don't have!
