Ole Miss sorority housing

At Ole Miss do all of the girls except freshman live in the house? About how many people per room and about how many rooms per house are there? Thanks.

Hi Jewel,

I have a limited knowledge of the housing in Oxford, but I do know that you are right about the freshmen in the dorms. I think about 44 (maybe a few more) girls are in the Nu Beta house, and there are two girls per room. The house rooms are as large or larger than the dorm rooms. Some girls live in the house for more than one year, but many of the students have apartments and condos. Olemissglitter may see this and she probably knows how many girls are in each house.

This is how we do it and I want to say that most others as well. Freshman year is the dorm, sophmore year is also in the dorm, then juniors and officers are in the house. It's usually two people to a room and how many rooms depends on the house.

The DG house only holds 54, I think, and with almost 300 in the chapter there is no way they can all live in.

Freshmen year dorm, then sophomore year dorm or the house, and lots of juniors live in the house because they are usually the officers. Then most seniors live off campus. AOII holds 46, and it is two members per room. I think most of the sororities require you live in the house at some point in your matriculation as a member. They all have different requirements to get in the house too I'm sure. I would also think that even though all of the sororities have more members than spots in the house, that as long as the house stays full they are happy! I think that keeps Corporation Boards (entity that runs the house made up of alumnae volunteers) are happy then everything is good!

One more point to add, it might seem more appealing to live off-campus in college with all of the new condos and full-amenity apartment complexes being built in Oxford. However, I really think it is beneficial to at least live on campus in your sorority house for a year. You really get the "full college experience." Plus, there are benefits to living in the house: parking is better, you can walk to class, you are in "the know" about things going on in your chapter, you probably won’t ever be late to a meal or to chapter meetings, etc. So I just wanted to throw that out there. Plus, I am pretty sure all of the sororities at Ole Miss have renovated their houses in the past 5 years, so it is like living in a well-kept mansion of sorts!

I agree wholeheartedly with OleMiss Glitter.

Another possible benefit that too often gets overlooked on any campus. Many times it's cheaper to live in a Chapter house than an apartment or a dorm. I suggest people investigate to compare costs. Don't forget to include the cost of utilites for an apartment.

Excellent point! When you live in the sorority house you don't have to worry about utilities or really food! Plus, think of the money you save not driving to campus every day for classes!

I think all of the posters are making great points and I don't know anything about Ole Miss, buuuut... Your houses are so small! My house at Kansas holds 77, so all freshmen and juniors and many seniors (including all Exec members) live in. In fact, Chi Omega has this enormous old house that I swear must hold about 100. I just thought that was an interesting difference!

Interesting difference, just depends on how the house was built. I think Tri Delta and Chi Omega hold around 60 at Ole Miss(might be more). Our houses are much more "land locked" than other sorority houses at other universities. I know for AOII with our new addition last year, there really wasn't anymore room for more housing, just a new chapter room and a dining room extension. I think Theta is adding some new suites with their new addition they are working on this summer. Phi Mu just finished a huge addition/renovation too. Ole Miss Phi Mu could probably comment on that better.

It's funny that anyone would call a house that holds 40-60 women small!

I would love to see the dining room! The dining areas in Oxford seem huge, to me. Can't imagine how large it must be to accommodate 77. But it must be a wonderful feeling to have that many sisters sit down to dinner. Don't envy the cooking and cleaning bills, lol.

I think she's mostly making the comparison that total chapter size at Ole Miss is so large, it does seem "small" that the houses can only hold 40-60 women. I also understand OleMissGlitter's point that chapters are restricted by their lot and can't add on to accommodate more women living in.

Our house could accommodate 65 girls living in (at a campus where chapter total was 92 when I was there and has since been lowered to 85) but we rarely had all women eating at the same time, so the dining room held more like 50-55. We had an overflow area for those dinners where we had more women than usual eating (Scholarship banquet, Founders Day, etc...). There was definitely a process to keeping everything coordinated, though!

I believe that it can have about 50-60 girls in the house. The exec. suites are a little bigger than the other room but not by much. We also added a new chapter room and made the living room bigger.
