Question Wedding traditions

Does your chapter do anything special for a brother or sister who's getting married? What sort of GLO traditions have you seen at weddings?

(I'm not in a GLO right now, but I just LOVE hearing about weddings.)

My chapter has a song that we sing during inspirational times that we call "The Circle Song" so at the reception for a sigma bride, we all hold hands and stand in a circle with the bride in the middle and serenade her!

I remember once coming across "the order of the pink garter" somewhere in the president's files. It was a silly little thing into which the husband of a Phi Mu bride should be inducted. If anyone has heard of this, or has a copy, let me know.

The chapter that I advise has little sisters give their big sisters garters for their wedding day during the annual Senior Ceremony.

Also, my chapter has the tradition of forming a circle around the bride during the reception and singing one of our DZ songs. I'm getting married later this year, and can't wait to have pictures of this in my wedding album!

My chapter of KD traditionally wears the garter we get from our bigs for initiation under our wedding dress. I will be wearing mine on September 20th

When I'm choosing bouquets for my bridesmaids, the two KDs will definitely have white roses in theirs!

Beta is the singing fraternity, and so there are lots of songs than can be used, but the song we sing at weddings is exclusive to our chapter, one called "Honey". The bride sits down and the brothers serenade her.

This is also common among Sinfonian chapters in my experience.

My little just got married last month. Several of us sisters were invited and we gathered round her at the reception and sang a song, "The Sweetheart Song," to her. The best thing about this????? It has never been done within our chapter! Usually the song is sung when the sister announces she is engaged. But I decided that I wanted to do something special for her, so I organized it for the wedding! She was so surprised and it was the most thoughtful gift I could have given to her (well, atleast in my opinion). I hope I started a tradition within my chapter of Phi Sigma Sigma

for the ninth attempt to post...

We sing "Love, Labor, Learning, and Loyalty" in a circle around the bride, and we may also sing "I See the Moon."

I have been to two different agd weddings, one from my chapter and the other was a different one. Mine is not a singing chapter at all and what songs we sing, we don't sing like any other chapter. We sing "Rose" or "Tonight as we gather" (most chapters sing "Today as we gather". The one I went to that wasn't my chapter, did "as we gathered" but so pretty and different that I couldn't sing with them. I would love to learn the Murray State version.

I find traditions very important and I find that this is one additional thing that sets us even farther apart from the non-greeks. I feel sorry for anyone who chooses to miss these special moments.

weddings

I was at a wedding earlier this year. It wasn't my GLO but rather a Tri-Delt marrying a Sigma Chi. There was a bunch of Sigma Chi's there and they got down on one knee and sang to the bride. It was so neat to see them sing to her. I could tell that she really appreciated it.

In my chapter/org. the girls circle and sing to the bride at the reception. The brides sometimes also choose to incorporate some ritual, but I can't say how! It's nice because all the girls notice at the ceremony, but it's our little secret!

one chapter of my glo keeps in their house a teacup cabinet. Each sister or alum that gets married sends a teacup\saucer set from their china set and they are put on display in this cabinet.... i think that's the cutest idea even though it's not something the members do for the bride/groom

sigmadahlin' - The Alpha Xi chapter on my campus does the opposite. Each pledge buys a teacup and saucer, it is displayed for their four years in a beautiful china cabinet in their chapter room. (I guess when they graduate they store them?) But when they get married, the chapter presents them with their teacup they bought way back when.

In Phi Mu (at least my chapter) we do what most have already mentioned...circling around the bride and singing. There is also a Chapter Development we do while undergrads which includes an activity geared towards your wedding but I don't know that I am allowed to disclose it...any other Phi Mus know what I'm talking about? By the time I get married...if I ever do...I will probably miss out on the singing thing due to losing touch with sisters and such but there are other facets of Phi Mu that will definitely be present!
