Pitt: 12 Credits Now Required for Recruitment

The U of Pittsburgh is now requiring students to have at least 12 credits in order to be eligible to pledge a sorority or fraternity. Looks like this will mean "deferred" recruitment for first-year students in most cases.

For a little more about this change see:

Rush was deferred for a full year when I pledged. In addition to establishing a college-level academic record, it also gave us time to have a clearer picture of each sorority before we went through rush. And of course gave the sororities a clearer picture of us. Most of us didn't much appreciate this deferment then, but it became more apparent as our college careers progressed and even more so as alums.

Initiation was also deferred until after the first semester of our pledgeship when our grades came in. All of the GLOs did that back in the day on my campus, and Chi Omega still has that policy.

My son walked onto the University of Maryland campus with 30 credits of AP credit. Why he would have been more appropriate to pledge a fraternity than his roommate is still beyond me...

From what was reported in the school paper, AP credit doesn't count toward the 12 credits. (Pitt alum here).

The part that has me confused is the chapters are reporting that they're preparing for formal in the fall as usual. Makes literally no sense whatsoever. That was also from the Pitt News. Wouldn't be the first time they got something wrong, but still very confusing.

I am really shocked to see universities actually getting away with fining organizations for members below a minimum GPA. Those fines are probably not levied against ANY other organization with members below 2.5.

I hope some or one organization sues. This is very possibly a deprivation of our free association rights.

It was like that for us, too. The day of each pledge individually going in front of the scholarship committee before initiation seems to have gone by the wayside, too.
