Dad dies of injuries suffered en route to see injured son

MISSOULA - A retired Bozeman police administrator has died of injuries suffered in a head-on crash as he traveled to see his son, hospitalized after a fraternity fight here.
Bill Kayser, 58, died Friday at St. Patrick Hospital, where his wife, Peg, and son, Scott, also were patients. Both were listed in stable condition Saturday.
Bill Kayser and his wife were in a car that collided with a small truck Dec. 3 on U.S. 93 north of Missoula after the truck crossed the highway's center line, the Montana Highway Patrol said. Both vehicles spun into a guardrail, then caught fire. Investigators said occupants of the car and truck got out before the burning, with help from three people who were in another vehicle. The driver of the truck, Leland Ellwein, 67, of St. Ignatius, also was taken to St. Patrick.
The Kaysers, who moved to Polson after his 2003 retirement as Bozeman's assistant police chief, had headed to Missoula soon after learning their son was injured at the fraternity house early Dec. 3. Scott Kayser, a University of Montana freshman, suffered broken bones and facial injuries at the Phi Gamma Delta house.
