Oh wow! I totally forgot all about elections. That's really exciting! I'm really happy to see Betty Mulkey as National VPM... I've heard the most amazing things about her.

Chapter Restructuring
An interesting development from Convention is the restructuring of Chapter Council. The position of "Chapter Excellence" is now getting a boost up to a Council position. The new post will be called VP - Operations. The position of VP - New Member Education will now be called VP - Member Education. Finally, the position of Assistant Treasurer will no longer be a Council position. It will now be an appointed position.
I think elevating the Chapter Excellence position is a great idea! Any thoughts on this from the younger crowd?

Coming from a chapter that had issues with it's Treasurers until I started as Asst. Treasurer... it sorta bothers me a bit. More because dealing with Treasury is a lot to learn, and is a lot of responsibility. I did like how Asst. Treasurer was on council.
Also, Asst. Treasurer and Panhel were jobs that newly initiated sisters usually start on council as, and moved up over the years. Chapter Excellence was always one of the older sisters, because they had more familiarity with the programs and requirements and such.
I wonder what else VP Operations will cover.
VP-Member Education... I feel sorta like this is adding a lot of responsibility onto an already very hectic position. Especially for chapters who initiate more than one new member class a year. It might be fine for bigger southern chapters where spring rush is unheard of- because what else did VP NMEd do the rest of the year? But in schools with 2 or 3 new member classes a year, that's a killer. Having a seperate ME chair always worked well for us.
So tell me about these new council members? The 2 names sound pretty familiar, but I can't recall much about them.
While Palm Springs is probably beautiful, I wish it was somewhere a little more central.

I absolutley love Betty! I met her at convention and she just wowed me.
I was also very moved to see the women cry as they were being voted in and installed. I think Bonnie Warren is going to do a great job as president!

I don't know either of the two new National Council members, but it sounds like Betty is wonderful. I wish I could have seen the new council being installed.
I'm kind of surprised that they chose Palm Springs for the next Convention. 2003 was in Arizona and NLC in 2004 was in Colorado. I would have thought they'd choose a Southern or Central state. Palm Springs is just a couple hours drive from Los Angeles -- extremely hot in the summer and very isolated. Of course if you're a delegate you really don't have time during Convention to do anything else.
I agree with you on the assistant treasurer, Dani. The chapter I used to work with had a lot of trouble with their finances. It took a very strong Treasurer to finally get them back on track. I don't think it would have worked as well if she hadn't been on Council as asst. treas. and I don't think it would have lasted if her successor hadn't been on Council already. I also agree about the loss of a younger sister on Council not being such a great idea. I hope it works out.

Thanks for the links to the Katydid! It was really nice to see all of the happenings of Convention!
I was so pleased to see that among the Women of Achievement who was honored was Patricia Wood Barnes also known as Sister Schubert--or that was her name when I knew her! Patricia used to live in Troy, Alabama, and I knew her personally! She and I attended the same church, St. Mark's. She is a wonderful lady and her daughters are great girls. She often brought her now famous rolls to all of our church functions and dinners. On top of that, she was just a sweet lady. I'm so glad to see her honored for her achievement in the formation of her own company from a small oven in her home to a full-fledged company!
Also great news was that Mountain Brook AA recieved the Alumnae Association Award. This is here in Birmingham, and one of two AAs in the area! Our APP is a member of this chapter, Margaret Watson, and was the lady that I referred to in my AI story.

I heard that the CX change was probably going to happen back in the fall when I was doing it. I also heard about the Assistant Treasurer being taken off council then, I've just been waiting for it all to happen.
I think adding CX will prove to be very beneficial seeing as how it's a position that entails so much, and having it on council will enable its holder to get much more done.
Assistant treasurer, while a vital role, never should have been on council to me. I think it being taken off will be good because it's going to make assistant positions be taken more seriously as whoever gets them really will be best trained to step up into the VP position, so hopefully it will make chapter members think very carefully about who they choose to fill the positions.
I'm just excited about all the changes. Congrats to all the chapters who got awards too! I love reading the daily recaps! How great it is to be a part of such an amazing sisterhood!

On "demoting" the Assistant Treasurer: having roomed with our own assistant treasurer who then became treasurer, she knew that this was being highly considered a year and a half ago, and agreed with it. All of the treasurer operations have become completely computerized over the last few years, which has greatly cut down on their work, especially for the assistant treasurer. And I always thought chapter excellence was too big a job for someone not on council.
Now, this VP-Member Ed position: is it just a *name* change, to more accurately represent the position, or are they really giving her a lot more duties?
Finally, the other new member of National Council, Kim Flood Ryan, is awesome. She was our CPP (correct me if I'm wrong) and I met her a few years ago as a recent initiate. She was very helpful to our chapter and made us feel like we could ask her anything. I was so happy to see her named to Council!
