Serenades
Do any DZ chapters still do serenades? What occasion would you do it for? What songs do you all use?
From what I've heard, they sound like a ton of fun! I'd love to get this going within my chapter. I'm all about promoting heritage!

I love it when fraternities come over and serenade us, so I would love it if my chapter started doing it!! It's sort of rare for sororities to serenade fraternities on my campus (it's usually the other way around), but I think it's cool.

Aggie,
I already replied to the other post, but I thought I'd share which songs we usually do.
Killarney Rose: if you don't know this song, I can give you the words.
Delta Zee: To the tune of Eidelweiss
In a Parked Car: I can give you the words to this too. We are famous for this one...the guys can sing along 'cause they always know we will sing it!
We usually do one or two serious songs and then a silly song.

is there anyway you could send me the words to those songs? my chapter has just started in the past few years of picking a sweetheart, and we only have a poem that the chapter recites to the lucky guy.
thanks so much!

At Illinois State, serenading is a HUGE deal for frats & sororities both. Usually the women go first, traveling to each fraternity house. We did 2 songs which we changed the words to and had dance moves for(stronger by britney spears and j-lo's i'm real) the words were changed to cute lyrics referring to our house. we practiced for serenading twice a week for several weeks before we actually did it. We would get to the fraternity we were serenading(we usually did 6 houses or so per night), perform our first song, do "introductions" which consisted of each sister stepping forward and saying her name, year in school, major, availablity status, and then a cute "pick up" line. After that, she would give presents to any fraternity man she might know in the chapter, or hand out gifts from older girls(only the new fall pledge class takes part in serenading) after introductions, we did our 2nd song and that was it. The guys is the exact same except they always throw in "dirty" songs that make us cringe! I love getting presents at serenading! If you have a boyfriend in a fraternity it's like Christmas! it is also a wonderful way for the new girls to be introduced formally to the fraternity men on campus and vice versa. I know several of the other sororities on campus only do traditional songs, but i think our way is much more unique, fun, and entertaining.

Wow! Sisters actually tell their "availability status"? OMG, I can't imagine...just picturing some poor sister that just had a horrible breakup standing in front of a frat house saying "Hey, my name is Suzie Sister, and I just got dumped! I'm free as a bird" LOL. Ok, I know that would never happen, but what exactly do sisters say about their "status". We never did serenades so this is new to me

Serenades at SJSU
Hi there!
At San Jose State University serenades are a very big part of our social calendar! We hold 2-4 Serenades a semester with differing fraternity houses, and we hold these on Monday nights after our chapter meetings. We use it as a way to introduce our New Members to the other houses, and to meet their pledges! The way it works at our house is that the pledges and new members both line up outside of our house, with their actives behind them. The initiates are usually on the porch with the NMs in front of them lined up on the walkway. The boys stand on the oposite side of the lawn, on the sidewalk with the pledges lined up in front of the initiates. When anyone talks, they walk in between, so all present can see and hear them clearly! see diagram--->
|DZ House|
initiates
new members lined up
[space in between, usually lawn]
pledges lined up
fraternity initiates
-------street--------
First we take turns singing songs back and forth at each other (in between each song the other house yells "song song song song!" Some of the songs we sing: take your man around the corner, Delta Zetas never drink, There are no Delta Zetas down in hell, Drink beer ). Then the New Members each take turns standing out and saying "Hi, my name is ____," the fraternity all says "hi ____," and then she tells a pick-up line, sometimes related to her major or things she likes to do. After all of the girls have gone, the boys do the same thing, but after each line they give one of the new members a rose (or their house's flower, but usually a rose as far as I have seen in all the houses).
After all of the New Members/Pledges are introduced, then we have exchanges. This is for the members that have bigs or littles in the other house they are doing a serenade with, so they do their letter/paddle exchange in front of both of their houses. They turn back to back and hold up what they are giving the other, and then rotate so everyone else can see it(girls go awwwww for pretty much everything, of course!), while still hiding it from their big/lil. They then turn around and show their stuff! It is very exciting!
At this point, if any of the girls in our house have a boyfriend in the other, he presents her with flowers. We don't really do lavaliering at our school, so this is a very looked forward to event! Some of the houses sing and dance with the girlfriends/new members as well, but it varies form fraternity to fraternity.
Afterwords the boys all get invited in to our house to mingle! Composites or turtle statues or our flag have a tendency to disapear at this point, but it's all in good fun! Serenades are one of the New Members favorite parts of the semester, and it is a really great way to get to know the pledges of other houses! It is a wonderful tradition and I hope you are able to bring it back to your campus!
