We're catching up and watching on the DVR...my daughter is excited that her Pi Phi sister is moving on, I'm excited to see Miss Virginia's science experiments, and I'm sad my sister Monica Thompson isn't in the top 5.

My ADPi sister, Alex Francke, didn't make the first cut. Maybe she'll try again!

This has been a very very different pageant than I am used to... a lot of it really interesting and not focusing on beauty anymore. The immediate cut from 15 to 7 seemed to have no reason given, so why have the cut?

Did the eight who didn't make the cut receive some scholarship money?

They have been trying so hard to rebrand Miss America, and there have been a lot of times that I thought that they were throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

They seem to forget that there are hardcore fans who want to know of changes, such as the 15 to 7 to 5 to 3 format, or only having three judges. I liked the job interview part, but there was so much agreement with the answers that it truly nullified the process. I do wonder if the new format can sustain the pageant.

That said, congratulations to Camille Schrier, our new Miss America!

My daughter and I really liked it. As we were watching, I could tell that the process and criteria really resonated with her, as someone in the same age bracket and general life situation (vocal performance degree, entering last semester of grad school, starting professional job search, etc.) as the contestants. It was much more modern and meaningful. Frankly, I've seen enough swimsuits in those superficial recruitment videos. I appreciated the focus on accomplishments and academics, instead of "luck of the draw looks."

That being said, the immediate 15 to 7 was odd, and the 5 to 3 was odd, given that there is still a 3rd and 4th runner up. And, we weren't sure how we felt about the "random" elimination anouncements.

Was Camille Schrier (former Miss Virginia; the new Miss America) in one of those new-fangled type of fast-speaking debate clubs in H.S./college? She spoke mega fast all night. Whatever scientific facts she may have mentioned during her talent competition went straight out of my head, un-understood.

During her reign, if Camille truly wants to BE understood and HAVE youth delight in the wonders of science she needs to SLOW DOWN her delivery.

As to NBCs programming last night, IMO the judges should not be allowed to vocalize biased opinions of any of the candidates during the televised competition. The Miss America Program isn't The Voice, but it sure devolved into it at one point with all the judges contestant critiques.

In addition, show co-hostess Kit Hoover should NOT be whooping-it-up after she reads every finalists name. The live studio audience does a creditable job in showing any necessary and proper contestant appreciation.

That said, did anyone else notice the LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG pause between the moment Lauren Ash said "...the new Miss America is..." and the actual naming of the winner? Were there accountants in a back room re-checking the winning tally? Did the judge who had to announce the winner not even believe the name she had to read? Because everyone at my house thought Miss Georgia walked away with the crown and were stunned when she did not.

Back to happier posts beyond mine...
