Talking Risk Management Programming

All righty people let's put this forum to use!

What are some of the programs your chapter has had? What are some you'd like to see? How could the programs be more affective?

We've had alcohol programs which also included a lot on date rape, an intro to self defense, and eating disorders. It seems like we're ALWAYS doing alcohol or eating disorders though!

Our alcohol programs include info on the short and long term affects, lots of statistics on alcohol related facts, and when and how to use either our chapter or school's drunk driving program.

One year there were even "live examples". Basically as a campus police officer gave his presentation, a few actives sat in the back having drink after drink. The officer would test them as they drank and pointed out all the ways alcohol affects you. We have it on tape and well, it was educational and funny. Plus we did it w/ a fraternity so we could see how alcohol affects men and women differently.

Another year the alcohol discussion some how ended up spending a lot of time discussing osteoporsis and date rape. Still informative though. Basically we were told to always watch our drinks and always use the buddy system. Oh and don't drink too much soda. It's bad for your bones and also amplifies the alcohol.

Our eating disorder programs from the school dietician are always enlightening. Unfortunately the girls that need it more than anyone always seem to pick that night to use their academic excuse to skip meeting. I hate the helpless feeling I get knowing that a few of my friends need to hit rock bottom before they'll get help.

The intro to self defense was also very enlightening and made me wish I had taken up some martial art as a young girl.

I'd like to see us do more than just read our hazing statement and actually have a discussion w/ our pledges as to why certain things constitute hazing by national standards even if they are litterally begging for it! It sucks that there are things that certain members and alumnae just can not be told. No matter how badly you want to talk about all the fun that was had.

I'd also like to see a program on drugs. It just occured to me that I've never seen our chapter have one. Two drugs that definitely need to be addressed are pot and E. So many people think their harmless. They just keep getting more and more popular on the national level. (Eventhough I knew way more people doing E in high school 5 yrs ago.)

My school had a TKE alum come in and give a speech about a drunk driving accident that he had been involved in. He showed a video that he and his friends had made the night of the accident, and spoke about how he had made the choice to drive drunk, and as a result killed three of his brothers. It was very sad, moving, and personal, and definitely left an impression on us about the importance of the sober system. I will find out his info for you if you want to contact him. He travels around the U.S. to speak at schools about his tragic experience.

I think you are refering to Stephenie Schmidt who was murdered at Pittsburg State U. by a co-worker who was out on parole and had a history of this..

Question

Anchor8.

What part of the country are you from? I am wondering because I think have that TKE come talk to our chapter would be a great Risk Management event. Let me know the details of your event. Thanks.
