In my APO chapter, we have a policy that when YOU sign up for a service project, YOU must go or YOU must find a replacement.

To be honest, I can't recall anyone ever breaking this policy, but perhaps a fine would be an appropriate consequence.

Fines or limitation of social privileges.

I agree with S, if YOU cancel YOU need to find your replacement.

My chapter operates on a point system, so ANY other chapter's philanthropy is worth 50 and OUR philanthropy is worth 100. Missing either without a valid excuse means you miss out on those points. If you don't make points for the semester, you can't go to formal.

I agree that these ladies need to be held responsibile for their actions (or lack of them). By you finding a replacement they have not learned any responsibility.

I am curious on why these members suddenly backed out. Better offers, school work, etc. If it was a longer time engagement that they thought, perhaps you could assist in breaking it down into manageable shifts. For next time consider announcing the expectations of the project prior to the sign up. That way they have no excuses since they understand what they signed up for.

If the members do not find a replacement, I would suggest that you still do this for them as it would look bad for your organization and all Greeks PR not to show up. However, a reprimand would be needed - perhaps this could be double the amount of volunteer time they committed in the first place to that organization they were originally going to assist with. They would be on 'social probation' until their 'time' was completed.

I don't agree with monetary fines in these instances because I feel it would show that you are paying your way out of a good deed - money solves all mentality. Remember Greek life is not just about college, but life beyond college. Missing a service related project should be dealt with a service related 'fine'.

When we had this problem we just put them in poor standing, meaning no social events, no voting etc.
We also have a point system that helps determine the housing list that was a major motivator. So each sister is required X hours of philanthropy, our philanthropy chair is required to offer enough events that anyone could get about 75% if they attended them all and the rest they do on their own.You get bonus points for hours you go over and if you don't do enough we fined them per hour they were short (the money went to Pine Mountain) and they lost points so they would be put farther down on the rooming list.

That's exactly how my chapter worked. We did the fining thing for a while, but then we went to the points thing and it seemed to work pretty well. If you didn't have enough points (and there wasn't a valid reason for you to not have them, like a truckload of classes or a crazy work schedule), you didn't go to socials. It was that simple.

Point systems work for a lot of chapters, a lot of the houses at our school have them. However, I don't know if that's going to be helpful to MageeKKG...

The way it's been explained to me by our officers (if I'm wrong, correct me Kappas!!) is that there is a policy in place that doesn't allow members to be restricted from things they're paying for. In other words, if you are paying for socials and formal through your dues (which you are) they cannot keep you from attending since your money is being spent to have the event. I also don't believe we can fine.

I think the best course of action is to talk to one of your chapter's advisors... they may have some advice on how to encourage members to make good to their commitments. And if you do decide to penalize them, your advisor can help you to think of a way to do so in an appropriate manner that is still in concordance with fraternity policy...
