USC fraternity bounced from campus

Action against Omega Psi Phi taken after attack on another fraternity in which 9 people were charged
By JAMES T. HAMMOND
Staff writer

Omega Psi Phi has been kicked off the University of South Carolina campus after nine people affiliated with the fraternity were charged in an attack on members of another fraternity.

Six of the nine people charged by the university’s police have been removed from university student housing, said USC spokesman Russ McKinney.

According to warrants, the nine Omega Psi Phi affiliates broke into the Alpha Phi Alpha residence hall Oct. 22, taunted and attacked residents, and caused about $2,300 damage. One resident was sent to the hospital for treatment.

Angry jitterbug13 clears her throat and goes on a...

*in my Sophia from Golden Girls voice* Picture it...The University of South Carolina at the Russell House Ballroom, April 2001. A young woman getting ready to graduate from college joins the entire African American school population in the Spring 2001 probate of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. There, we see who are the new members of the Theta Nu Chapter.

While the show is going on, the Zeta Zeta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi are upset. No one showed up at their pool tournment because the Alphas are having their probate. They sneak during the probate and see the Alphas are making fun of them. People laugh and have a good time.

One of the Omegas goes up to the middle of the ballroom and starts fussing with the Alphas. It takes one person to throw a punch and have some P.O. Kappas in the mix...

ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE!!

People punching each other, chairs thrown and one of them hits an AKA. USC PD has to call in Columbia PD to calm the scene.

Sophia would say there is a message in this story. But after seeing the above post that Hooser has, there are several.

The incident I described above should have been the fight that ended all fights among the BGLOs. Almost five years and a generation of students later, not a d*nm thing has changed.

And how were the Omegas were able to get into the Alphas' hall at McBride? You need a code to get in. I know some girls who knew the code by heart but I wasn't one of them.

Also, why would you do something stupid like that? As some of ya'll may know, this is the same chapter that was able to raise their numbers the last few years and is getting a house built on Greek Village after being asked by the college president. And yes, this is the same chapter that was being called all kinds of derogitary (sp) names on fratty.net. Having all of these accomplishements should have made the bruhs realized that 1) they were walking on thin ice because people were waiting on them to mess up and 2)that they should not particpate in this kind of foolishness. The sorors just came back on campus after six years and the Omegas at Benedict just came back after almost ten. Zeta Zeta just came back a few years before I came to USC. They should know how hard it was for them to come back on a college campus.

In closing, I do not say this to diss the Omegas. I love them! Out of my mother's five brothers, four of them are Omegas. I have some male friends (one of them has been my friend since high school) that are Omegas. But they should be wary of their actions because these days, it doesn't take much to suspend a chapter.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to rant.
JB13

ETA: I read all of the story. Good it's not going to interfer with the building of the house. And how can someone be an former Omega? Did he denounce his letters? And yes, MORE ALUMNI/ALUMNAE INVOLEMENT WITH UNDERGRAD CHAPTERS!

Well, it's not like those codes aren't pretty well known around campus. I knew a few when I was there... All it takes is one drunk guy telling his *cough* girl for the night what the code is, and her telling someone else.

I knew the code for one of the halls and I didn't even go there!

I am not sure where The Lynching came in and was not explained in the Article.

I just cannot see someone putting a noose around someones neck and trying to string them up from the ground at a party.

Is there another base for this word that I am missing?

According to the article:

The legal definition of lynching under South Carolina law is the act of two or more persons attacking another person, causing death or injury.

It is way down toward the bottom of the article. The word sounds a lot worse than the event in this case.

I'm confused. If they were kicked off campus, why are they still building a house? Was the whole fraternity kicked off or just the ones that were involved?

I think there are 20 chapter members (maybe more) and only eight and one alumni were involved. From what I got from the story, they were suspened and reinstated by USC. Omega's national office (in Atlanta) on the other hand, have suspended the chapter for probably a year (or more). They can still be active on campus, but under a close watch with nationals and the alumni chapter(s).

In other words, USC can still recogized you on campus, even though your chapter is suspened or on probation by the national office. That's how they are still able to build the house.

No problem! Omegas have not been the only GLO who has been in that situation I mentioned.

I almost overlooked it as well. It's mentioned almost in passing toward the very bottom of the article.

In this case, it sounds like just leagalese in the law used to bring charges.

It certainly does sensationalize the thread topic, though, doesn't it?
