nervous about rush...any tips???
Hey everyone! Okay, my deal is that I transferred to a large University from a tiny itty bitty community college and now I'm interested in joining a sorority...Phi Sigma Sigma in fact. BUT-I'm nervous about rushing. Does anyone have any tips at all about how to "KNOW" I'll get recruited????

are you going through informal recruitment? cause if you are going through formal, it might not be a good idea to set your hopes so high for phi sig. what if you dont get it? do you still want that name? it is just a thought...
good luck to you, i hope that you get what you want.

Hmm, I'm not really sure. I've gone to the Greek Meeting and talked to a couple girls at Phi Sig and the next step they said is the Open House. Then, all interested girls can check out which house would be best for them and who they want to join with. After Open House, rush starts and the girls didn't say anything about informal or formal . Soooo...I dunno...
What's the deal with not setting my hopes so high? Does Phi Sig have some sorta rep that I haven't heard about? My second choice is Alpha Omicron Pi. How are they?

what i meant was that you cant be 100% sure that phi sig will offer you a bid, can you? you dont want to sound presumptuous. (sp?).. from the way you are discribing it seems to be an informal rush. hopefully a sister, namely a phi sig can explain things better.

yeah, I hope so. I'm just hoping to be recruited to Phi Sig because I've talked to several girls who live in the house and they seem to be the only girls on campus who actually LOVE being a part of their house. ya know?
Do you think it'll help if a friend of mine talks to our vice-president of greek affairs about helping me to get recruited?

i can tell you want this badly. but you should just do your best when you go see the girls during open house. you dont want to seem too over eager. you should look into getting some recs...

Recruitment
Phi Sigma Sigma,
Alpha Omicron Pi is absolutely FANTASTIC . Seriously, it sounds as if there are two or more sororities on your campus and their formal recruitment begins with Open House where Potential New Members can visit each house and get a feel for which ones they like and which they don't. After Open House (and I am guessing since I don't know where you are in school) the Potential New Members decide which houses they want to visit for the second party and the Sororities decide who they want to invite back. All that gets matched up and goes on for however many parties there are until Bid Day. You should keep an open mind and seriously consider each house. You may change your mind about where you want to go.
Do you mind telling us where you go to school?

Great. Thank you so much. If you can't tell, I'm SO new to this whole thing and I really think it'll be a good experience. Everyone I talk to says that it's the best thing they've done in college and I'd hate to not even try, ya know? This sounds kinda stupid but I knew I wanted to join a sorority since like 7th grade . LoL, stupid huh? But anyway...thanks for the advice. I'll take it into consideration next month!

aopinthesky...I'm pretty sure that's how our whole recruitment thing goes on here. By the way, I go to Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania. We actually have 10 sororities, so it probably wouldbe a better idea to check out everyone before making my decision. Thanks

May I suggest you change your user name? Calling yourself "Phi Sigma Sigma" before you have started formal recruitment may be misinterpreted by sorority women as presumptuous--"jumping the gun," if you will, because a lot can happen between now and Bid Day.
Most people here will realize that you selected that name out of eagerness and excitement, but you don't want anyone taking it the wrong way either.
Definitely continue to check out the "Rush" Forum because there is a plethora of information there and you can educate yourself all about how to make yourself a model PNM (that means Potential New Member).
Good luck to you!
Edited because I realized that I am slowly losing my mind!

It's great that you want to join a sorority and go through recruitment! The single most important suggestion I offer is to keep an open mind. We say that often on GC, and we truly mean it. First impressions are great, but sometimes you can not and do not get a clear picture of all the sorority options you have available at first impression.
Have you read the 1st Announcement thread in the Rush Forum? Check that out, and here are a couple other threads I think mya be helpful about general information on Sorority Recruitment.
http://forums.greekchat.com/gcforums...threadid=34262 (pnm's-why should I be in a sorority?)
http://forums.greekchat.com/gcforums...threadid=35965 (something for pnm's to remember)
http://forums.greekchat.com/gcforums...threadid=30758 (Rush - What to NOT do or say)
http://forums.greekchat.com/gcforums...&threadid=2302 (My Advice to Sorority Rushees... has a Southern Rush emphasis, still some good general tips)
In addition, I have to agree with smiley's suggestion about your user name. I'm clearly not a member of Phi Sig, but I would expect someone with such an User Name to be a member of that sorority. You really may want to re-register with another user name so that no one will think you are trying to be something you aren't.
Good luck!
Christin

HI There,
You might want to check out the Phi Sigma Sigma forums on Greekchat as well. I know we have some Pennsylvania sisters on the board.
Also, as much as you love Phi Sigma Sigma and I can't wait to see a rush thread with Phi Sigma Sigma, you might want to sign on with a different screen name for now. At least until Rush at your school is through - now you know I'm going to hope that you'll go Phi Sig but I also hope you'll keep an open mind with all the sororities on your campus. We're the only NPC at my campus in California so I don't know how rush works everywhere else but from what I've read on the rush threads sometimes after starting rush you discover things you like about more then one house.
In the meantime keep talking to the Phi Sigs that you've met and let them know you're interested in their house (unless that breaks recruitment rules). I can't wait to read your rush thread. When exactly is your recruitment period?
Good luck,
Carolyn

Phi Sigma Sigma,
I'm glad to hear you are interseted in joining a sorority. I'm also glad to see you are very excited about my sorority. I love Phi Sig to death. Its the best thing i've ever done and I truly enjoy being a sister of such a great sorority.
I'm also very glad that you have come to greek chat because you are going to meet many other women that love their sororities just as much as I love mine.
And to agree with everyone else that has responded to your post. Please Please keep an open mind. 10 sororities on your campus that is awesome! That gives you that many options on finding your home. Of course I'm not saying disregard Phi Sig. If you really like the chapter there, follow your heart because I am sure they are great women! But please don't block out any others because your home could be anywhere. Best Wishes at the open houses and during Recruitment!!
Also I know I'm only one Phi Sigma Sigma and you could get the other opinions of my other greek chat Phi Sigs, But I would appreciate if you changed your screen name, for now anyway. Like some one mentioned before, since you aren't a member its kinda unfair to those of us that are. I hope you understand and Thank you. If you have any questions or just want to chat I'd love to talk to you pm me or email me at: HeaterMae8@aol.com
Good Luck!! and Enjoy your Recruitment
Heather

Just to let you know, two of the sororities at Shippensburg are NPHC sororities. This means that they do not participate in formal rush. The other 7 are members of the Women's Panhellenic Council - there are 5 national and 2 local sororities. I'm not sure what the 10th one would be - I can't find anything on the site about a multicultural or professional sorority.
The "Open House" is the first round of formal rush. The women you talked to were simply informing you to go to the open house and go from there.
I would absolutely NOT have anyone talk to the VP of Greek affairs re your rushing - that would be kind of like having your mom talk to the football coach and telling him to make the quarterback take you to the prom.
In conclusion I echo everyone else who has urged you to change your screen name. Using a name with just a sorority's mascot, colors or flower when you are not a member can be seen as bold and presumptuous - let alone using the name of the sorority itself. It could have a very negative effect on whether or not you will be accepted by the group you have your eye on, or any group for that matter.
