DURHAM — It didn't take long for some University of New Hampshire students to end up in the booking room of both the Durham and university police departments.
Police arrested 29 people, some of whom were students, Saturday night and early Sunday morning just a day after freshmen moved into campus residence halls.
The night was filled with the typical alcohol-related arrests, such as unlawful possession, unlawful transportation and DWI. A fire, a fight and a search for a student who escaped from police custody all occurred within a 3[1/2]-hour span.
Just before 10:30 p.m., Deputy Police Chief Rene Kelley responded to Madbury Road where two bicycle officers, Detective Gabe Tarrants and Officer Holly Rouleau, had two people under arrest in front of Tudor Hall. Upon arriving several students pointed out flames coming from a trash bin behind the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity next to the site of the arrest. The ]fraternity is not recognized by the university Greek System.
A couch and chair adjacent to the dumpster were engulfed in flames as the fire began to spread to the dumpster and a red Ford Ranger parked nearby. As the Fire Department responded with an engine, the windows and tires on the Ranger blew out, and an explosion came from under the front-end of the small pickup.
