Thumbs down UNCF

I watched the UNCF telecast this weekend. I saw various organizations pledge $$$ to $$$.
I began to think about my chapter and what we contributed to this effort. The irony of this situation is that many non-black organizations raised/donated more $$$ than some black organizations that have fewer members. Am I being overly critical of my brothers and sisters or should we all be doing more.

i didn't watch it. but i know there are alot of non black organizations that have alot of money to give and it is a benifit to them to do so for tax purposes. also black organizations do need to suport the UNCF or whatever organization is trying to help their community.

I think your question is a good one. I also agree with Positively AKA. Most of those organizations have the resources that many of ours do not; however, I think we could do a better job. Many times when asking this kind of question we forget that all colleges are not the same; nor are they similar. A large university within a sympathetic community has a better chance to raise more money than one located out in the boondocks with a small African-American population(despite efforts to appeal to a diverse group of people in their fund-raising efforts). Naturally the later will have to work harder to raise a reasonable amount to contribute to the UNCF.

As far as corporate contributions to causes like UNCF, much of the money is not from the corporation at all. Most companies raise money from individual employees and then some 'match' with a company contribution. So in fact, a lot of money is coming from our community (individual employees) with a corporate name attached to it.
