Omigod! This family is enduring such a trial. I can't imagine the path they are traveling.

All those surgeries for that baby? Can she even see with her eye sockets like that?

It looks like she can see. I'm always amazed when it's the people who have what we consider the most disastrous problems are the most loving and wonderful. Did you see the hugs she was giving out????

There are so many wonderful, talented, and generous doctors in this country. I hope that they will do their best to help little Juliana.

I cannot begin to fathom what chromosomes are missing this poor little girl's face. Cleft palate occurs during fetal development in the later trimesters. Thought usually due to vitamin B--specifically--folic acid deficiency not taken before and during the first trimesters of pregnancies.

That is why, ladies, if you want children, you have to do pre-pregnancy care the best way you know how. Clean up your health--especially if you are past 35 years old...

But, there are many chromosomal fragile and instability sites that cause cleft palate--a whole couple of classes of genes...

We scientists just don't know... And the M.D. have a tough time too. Eventually, we hope we all could make a difference. Hopefully the new HHS chief will maintain or increase NIH funding so that folks don't suffer this kind of fate in life...

That dear little girl! What a blessing that she has such loving parents!!

AKA_Monet, I thought that cleft palate came from certain drugs (ie: valium) being used early in a pregnancy. Is that just another way?

Also, I know that there is a team of doctors and nurses who use their vacations to travel to other countries to help children such as these, for free. I'd like to think that they'd help their own, too! I was shocked to hear that Thalidomide is being sold as an drug to arrest the spread of AIDS in many third world nations! I don't know if anyone here has ever met someone whose mother took Thalidomide, but it's quite a memorable experience!

This is SO true. One of my sisters-in-law just lost her baby because of spina bifida, which is caused by lack of folic acid. In her case, though, she didn't do anything wrong... her body is just unable to process it correctly. The baby was born and lived for 2 weeks before they finally had to let her go. It was horribly sad, and I think that women should do everything in their power to prevent such tragedies whenever possible.

As for the topic at hand, though, I really feel for that little girl and her family. It must be horrible to have to go through it.

I worry about her quality of life. From what I know about Treacher-Collins Syndrome, her case is among the most severe.

honey, they never STOPPED using thalidomide. In some countries, it has been used to treat leprosy. It's just no longer being used for women of childbearing age in the US.

I hadn't heard of valium myself... But that does not mean it is not true. Many drugs cause birth defects, in fact. Mainly, smoking and illegal drug use, such as heroin and cocaine. Why crack doesn't do many birth deformities, I dunno--maybe, but I haven't heard of any... Cleft palate may occur with a vitamin deficiency. Many 2nd and 3rd world countries suffer from cleft palate children. There is also poor water quality--unsuitable for human consumption--so that may be another thing especially with high mercury, lead and other contaminants... But I think I read a Nature or Science article on the gene family that is mutated for the development of cleft palate. So there many genes affected by environmental toxins...
