Question Do you think nationals will ever open up chapters at community colleges?

i dont know if this has been asked before and the search came up empty, but do you think they will ever expand national fraternity and sorority chapters to community colleges? is it because of numbers? the ratio of community colleges to universities is like a million to one?

I think it would be very difficult to maintain any sort of strong chapter at community college. It would be very difficult to maintain strong leadership because so many people would be going in and out. Also, alumni support would be difficult to maintain- I don't know of many community colleges with any sort of strong alumni base. Community colleges are all (or almost all) commuter schools as well, which have proven to be difficult battlegrounds for GLOs.

Also, is there really a need for it? Seems most orgs have their hands full.

NPC's policy is that chapters can only be at 4-year colleges. I don't know if NIC has any such rule.

Do any NPHC groups have chapters at 2-year institutions?

DST doesn't. It is prohibited by our Grand Chapter Bylaws, and I doubt it will be changed anytime soon.

There is one particular fraternity that I wouldn't put it past.

Not going to name names though.

The community college at my school is integrated with the four year school. (Now, it's supposed to be "seperate," but that's a joke) Several programs start out in the community college and end in the four year, like my program. I'm pretty sure all the GLOs take community college members, I haven't heard anyone turning anyone away for that reason.

I'm actually surprised they haven't started letting Henry Ford CC students start rushing at UMD since we're directly next door to each other. I'd hate that idea though, because like it's been said many of those students are just starting out there and transferring elsewhere. Then again, many of those students end up transferring to UMD. It'd be too inconvenient though because it's nice to have students who will be on UMD campus at least one day a week.

If I recall correctly, there was a chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon that was charters at Miami-Dade Community College at least 15 or so years ago. Don't know if it's still around...

But I DO know that the school is now called Miami-Dade College...

Lol. Exactly what I was thinking. Wouldn't be surprised if it has already happened.

Even at a four year commuter school, it's hard. I know because I was intiated at one.

This school has 3 NPCs and 4 National frats, but there is so much competition from the locals, that can do whatever they want, and the school won't get rid of them or force the mto go national.

Most of us stay all four years (well, it's not uncommon to have 5th or 6th year seniors), but it's still hard to get the numbers to make national happy.

Same here. 3 NPCs, 2 National fraternities, 2 engineering (one women, one men), and then the local but they recruit wherever anyways. Most of their members don't even go to UMD. One of our NPCs is struggling real bad but I can't say it's not their own fault.

I didn't know that NPC had a rule about 4 year schools, although it makes perfect sense.

I think a CC would be hard to get a greek chapter started. Although I wish that NPC's would be more open to juniors rushing. I say this because so many women can't afford to go straight to a 4 year university and do the community college route. So by the time their at a college they are juniors and let's face it juniors don't rank very high when it comes to formal. I wish that would change. But I realize something like that will just take time and persistance of members.
