Bairds Manual

Who publishes Baird's Manual and when do they decide to print a new one? The current one is very dated.

NIC took over publishing the book years ago. IIRC, last pub. date was in 1991. The one prior was ~1977. When I contacted them a couple of years ago about an updated version, I was told that no more would be printed until the current inventory was sold. We may be waiting a long time because the 1991 version is not as comprehensive as previous editions.

1991 was the last to be printed. It actually sucks. It does leave a lot out for sure. Ah, the new Editors have no love, but want to sell Books.

I have 4 starting at 1932, one of the better ones for Oldsters.

I beleive you can go to the IFC Site and older one cheaper than off of ebay.

If everything was included up to today, it would weigh about 40 lbs.

Thumbs up

Yes He Was, just as Balfour Is a Sigma Chi.

But both realized that Greeks as a total were Much Bigger than anyone Fraternity or Sorority!

g41965,

cannot use Spell Check, it screws up Earp Speak!

At one time, there were two People who worked on Bairds to Update it, one Eric Conard a TEKE and another person a Sig Ep.

Sig Ep Passed and Eric Moved to Colo.

NIC did take it over, but remember it is a daunting task to keep updated.

Yes, as I said, Greeks are Much bigger than just what a book will tell you. But Bairds was presented as a History of Greeks.

Much has been lost!

The Baird Foundation still exists, and they publish it. They are now associated with the NIC, but I'm not sure if they are a subordinate group or fully independent.

They will publish a new version as soon as the 1991 sells through.

I know this because I spoke with the President of the Baird's Foundation a few years ago.

I believe William Raymond Baird, Beta, is the first picture on SAE's wall of fame at their HQ. Sweet.

I just purchased a Baird's (16th ed) for $70. I thought based on the availability it was a decent price. It was the cheapest. I was looking at other books on barnes and nobles out of print site and found about a dozen with variety of editions. It just seems outrageous some of the prices. I can't recall the edition, but someone was selling one for over $400!!! I couldn't believe it.

It just doesn't seem hard to mass produce a large paperback book that has everything that has ever been contained in all the editions. A publisher should buy the rights to it and get it done. I'm sure they would get their money back.

I'm sure there are people out there that would pay the price of a used textbook for something like this.
