Alpha Phi Omega spreads to two other institutions
Alpha Phi Omega has recently instituted two new chapters, one at the University of Pittsburgh and the other at Cornell University.
A distinctive Lafayette enterprise, Alpha Phi Omega was established in 1925 by Frank Reed Horton '26. It is essentially an honor intercollegiate fraternity whose members are selected on the basis of scholastic rating, extra-curriculum activities and good fellowship.
It has been noted that many students have erroneously spoken of Alpha Phi Omega as having been associated with the boy scout movement. Even though the majority of its members have been at one time associated with scouting, and though several of its members have entered the field of professional scouting and have fostered the establishment of scout troops in Easton, Alpha Phi Omega is not in any way affiliated with the national boy scout movement.
(From "The Lafayette", March 2, 1927)

"Alpha Phi Omega is not in any way affiliated with the national boy scout movement."
Incorrect. We had the affiliation of requiring, at the time, past membership in scouting to join. And chapters had scouting advisors. And we viewed council, regional, and national level professionals as almost automatic scouting advisors.
In a few years, we would receive formal approval from the BSA.
But the mistake some people make is assume that having a partnership with them means they run us. It doesn't and never did.

I'm actually more willing to believe the newspaper here. They wouldn't make such a point of explaining that the general belief was wrong unless they were sure of themselves. There is a great deal about the Fraternity that changed between the original founding and the significant changes that came with HRB's assumption of presidency and the official recognition by BSA. I'm not sure *any* of us would recognize the Initiation ceremony prior to the 1932 re-write.

I was informally discussing this with brothers at the National Volunteer Conference. I really wish we could track one down.
