We go by Sig Kap at Maryland, meaning the general student body and rest of the Greek Community would refer to us as Sig Kap, if not our full name. We only use Sigma K, SK, or Sigma in recruitment/serenading/etc songs, whichever fits best.
I think it's kind of pretentious/overly self-important to refer to ourselves as Sigmas to the outside world, because it's kind of like saying that we're the most important group with a Sigma in our name. Kind of like saying "UM" and assuming everyone knows which UM you mean. Going by Sigma internally doesn't bother me as much. I think Tri Sigma is justified in going by Sigma, since that is the only letter in their name.
Also, I like the letter Kappa. Going by just Sigma is hating on the Kappa.
I'm guessing that GWU uses Sigma because the sister who created our DC alumnae chapter website (we are in the process of getting our charter) titled it "DC Sigmas" and she is from GWU. What about Tri Sigma alumnae in the area? They are DC Sigmas. I don't like it, but it's not worth a fight IMO.
However, one thing we have to remember, is that in 1874 when we were founded, there was no National Panhellenic Conference. There was no other group (that would eventually join the NPC) that had been founded by 1874 that had a Sigma in the name, and even if there was, I don't know if there was much awareness of other societies by our founders. So you can't really fault them for it.
