Fining not allowed by your HQ?
My sorority is not allowed to fine its members for missing events. This got me wondering if there was anyone else not allowed to fine.

I think the only things we are allowed to fine for are recruitment events (COB's, Formal Recruitment, Bid Day, etc.) and those fines are hefty.

we were allowed to fine for pretty much anything that we'd approved in our code of conduct. besides missing recruitment stuff, we could get fined for signing up for an event and not attending, chewing gum or talking during meetings, being late for meeting. however, those types of fines were hardly ever implemented.

I think there is another thread about this somewhere.
I discourge my women from fining as many would rather pay it than go to whatever it is they are being fined for. I always found that taking away social functions was a better way to get everyone to show up. Nationally, we do not recommend fining and you cannot enforce it (put someone on financial probation) for fines. So the only way to enforce a fine being paid is on the local level - if they aren't paid up they can't go to social functions. So, if you just take the social away the first time you save yourself the headache of collecting and enforcing the fines.

the only thing that my chapter fines us for is not doing our house chores, which is $10 per week.

At Indiana in the good old days, if a member didn't pay room and/or board, he could be reported to the school and they would put him on the "check list". That meant he couldn't enroll for the next term, or get a copy of his transcript.
Couldn't use the check list for dues or fines, though.
Any place still get that type of cooperation from the school?

I've heard some schools in California do this (UCLA?).

And every Advisor!
"Can we borrow your Visa so we can rent a car for Leadership Conference?"
Yep, that's what I live for - to have 10 collegiates go out of state with my Visa card!

Yeah, and we've levied some pretty hefty fines for stupidity actually.
Sometimes you have to do that to get some kids' attention.
