Which Miami?
I have looked at a number of histories of Gamma Sigma Sigma on the internet and elsewhere and there seems to be great confusion on "Which Miami" was one of the eight schools involved in founding GSS. Was it Miami of Ohio or University of Miami in Florida?
Also, I have been unable to find the answer in a chapter list, as the chapter lists I have seen have not had a Miami in the first eight chapters, they are also missing Eta chapter. Was Eta chapter allocated for this Miami group (whichever Miami) and then not assigned when the group failed (or did not align with GSS)?
Thank You

The correct Miami is....Miami University of OHIO.
We did have a chapter at U of M in Miami. That is the Upsilon Chapter.
The answer to your second question is that Eta Chapter is (and always will be) allotted to the Miami University of Ohio--and Eta will never be assigned to another group.

OK, how do we get things fixed? The National Website says University of Miami, the Wikipedia page says University of Miami at Ohio, but links to the Florida school. There are actually more Google hits for "Gamma Sigma Sigma" and "University of Miami" than "Gamma Sigma Sigma" and "Miami University" and at least one of the latter is "Miami University of Florida"! I'm willing to help, if you can give me a source they can not argue with (like clearly making the National Website say Miami University of Ohio. If you find my concern misplaced and inappropriate, let me know.

I'll let the webmaster know about it so it can get corrected on the National Site. Can't really do anything about Wikipedia.

Forgive the crash but you (or anyone) can correct it yourself in Wikipedia......
Been there, done that with references to famous actresses who are supposed members of Gamma Phi Beta.

I remember the Wikipedia article on Alpha Gamma Delta once listed Rue McLanahan, Raquel Welch, Carly Simon, Carole King, and even MADONNA as accomplished alumnae. Wrong-o!
Pardon another crasher, but yes...anyone can edit stuff on Wikipedia -- you don't even have to register, either. That's why Wikipedia shouldn't be considered the be all, end all of things.

Wikipedia is now fixed. Anyone can do that. Also, I'll see if I can find anything in the Alpha Phi Omega Torch and Trefoils (Fraternity Magazine) from the early 1950s involving trying to co-ordinate the girls service groups together...

Thanks guys. I didn't know that...
Randy there isn't a need to do that. That part of the history is unofficial. However, you will find that in many of our individual chapter histories, the local Alpha Phi Omega chapter assisted in the founding (either in support or even financially) of that particular chapter.

I just received confirmation of this from the National Archivist. Here is a quote from her:
Yes Miami, not Ohio. Eta was reserved at the 1st national convention in Chicago, but University of Miami in Coral Gables came into Gamma Sig as Upsilon in 1958, 6 years after the representative from U of M showed up at Beekman Towers.
I asked her why it was listed as Miami of Ohio on the national website, but haven't received a reply yet.

Now I am completely confused
So Eta was reserved for U of Miami in Florida and then they later were given Upsilon for their letters as well? Why? I can understand if Eta and Upsilon were for two different schools, but were things so confused that they forgot that only 6 years before the Eta had been reserved for them?
Also for clarification of the thread, can we please use UofMiami(FL) for the one in Florida and MiamiU(OH) for the one in Ohio. About all I'm sure of is that Upsilon was for UofMiamiFL...

So boiled down...
University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida had a representative at Beekman Towers and had Eta reserved for it (. When it actually joined (6 years later), it was assigned Upsilon.
Miami University of Ohio in the city of Miami, Ohio neither had a representative at Beekman Towers not has ever had a chapter of Gamma Sigma Sigma.
Is that correct?
