Did anybody watch the new realworld?
OK so I watched the new real world, and I was really upset by the girl from Tampa, Robin who made the comment about Brad from Chicago. She was talking about his attitude towards girls, and she was like he is the typical frat boy type!?! Ok first off their is a typical frat boy type? I really get sick of being automatically put in this category by some women (usually those women who are GDI's) who see fraternity men in their letters. They automatically have made an assumption about us (which typically seems to be a bad one, or atleast my experiences have been that way). This is not always true, but it seems to be the case more often than not. Have any other guys experienced this?

I'm not a guy, but I saw this episode and I didn't really think the way she described Brad was inaccurate. First of all I didn't see him wearing letters during the episode so maybe she was just making a judgement on his looks. Now maybe that's a bit offensive just basing his "frat boyness" on his outward appearance - but we all know what kind of guy she is describing: muscular, cute, outgoing...perhaps a "party kid". And this describes my first impression of Brad as well. And she did say 'typical frat boy type' which doesn't really imply that she thinks all fraternity guys are like this...just what I got from the episode.
I can understand being offended, but if I heard some GDI say they met some typical sorority girl, I would have a pretty clear idea of what the girl was like: pretty, blonde, thin, tan, kind of ditsy...probably wearing some sort of Tiffany's jewelry. Of course I don't really consider myself a "typical" sorority girl, but I know they exist and it might be some people's only experience with GLO members. So i don't think I would be that offended...unless the person met a GLO member and refused to see past their stereotypical view of them.

I'd have to agree with AlphaPhiBubbles on what that girl (can't remember her name) on real world said about Brad. I can understand where you can be offended by it tho. Heck, when she kept calling people from the North Yankee's I was getting offended because when I associate the word Yankee I associate it with NY because that what I've always heard and been taught. I'm from Michigan and I don't consider myself a Yankee...just a michiganader lol.
Also, I was watching previews for the new season of true life and there is a true life episode dealing with an addiction with a presricibed drug and they showed a Theta Chi (He had letters on) taking these prescribed drugs. I was a lil surprised to see him wearing his letters. But I'm gonna watch for that episode.

I agree with what was said about the typical frat boy image. I'm a girl, but many of my friends are fraternity men. And yes, some do tend to fit that stereotype, but many more do not. I feel like the stereotype is something so old and outdated and few are willing to look past that. Greek orgs have changed so much, even in the past few years with all of the new rules on hazing and I feel that Cameran's comments about Brad make us all look bad. She does make out with him later on in the season, so maybe her opinions will change!

Well, she was the typical brainless fake boob type, so consider the source.

Just to clarify~
Robin is the Coyote Ugly bartender from Tampa with big fake boobs that kept calling him the Frat Boy Type.
Cameran is the 19 year old Southern Belle who kept calling him a loud obnoxious Yankee. She is also the one the was attracted to him.

People on this board seem to take offense to everything so easily.

offensive?!?
I believe this board is an outlet for people to truly to discuss how they feel about certain subjects that may not be fully discussed in a "normal" face to face conversation. I really appreciate the boards, and all of your comments they really allow you to see the big picture of things, and you also kinda've get a feel on how others feel about certain subjects before you bring it up in a normal conversation with friends. Thanks for all of you who post!

So I thought about it, and then a lightbulb went on in my head:
Doesn't this Robin chick's bio on MTV say that she is a "sorority sister"??? I don't know how that changes things but I think it would be safe to say she might know a little more about "frat boys" than we gave her credit for. Just a thought.

LOL well naturally you don't consider yourself a Yankee because you ARE one. People from the North don't call each OTHER Yankees, now do they? To me, anyone north of Virginia (excluding Kentucky/West VA area, I suppose) is a Yankee.
Anyway, Robin is from Florida and Cameron is from SC, but I can't remember which they said was in a sorority. I think Cameron though.

Cameran is not in a sorority. Someone in another thread said that Robin is a DG. There is a DG chapter at USF, where she attends, but no webpage.

I haven't watched the new season yet, but from another thread 'real world/road rules greeks' (I believe it was called), someone states that one of the girls in the house is a KKG. I'm pretty sure it is Robin, although I'm not quite sure.
As for what this thread is actually about, even though I haven't seen the episode, I can understand the frustration of being stereotyped. I have blonde hair (well natural that is, brown now), blue eyes, I can be a complete ditz at times, so what I'm supposed to take it when someone calls me a typical sorority girl? I just love how somehow all sorority girls are the same. I'm my own person. I'm different from my sisters and I'm different from all the sorority girls out there.
Us talking about this 'stereotype' is encouraging this stereotype to exist.
We, as Greeks, are always complaining about the bad PR that we get. The horrible stereotypes that are associated with being Greek. But here we have, from the real world, possibly one Greek talking smack about another Greek. No wonder the stereotypes and myths about Greeks don't go away.
Either way this is just my opinion. Agree with, disagree with me, just respect that this is my opinion about this subject.
