Lasik surgery?

Wondering if anyone in here has had lasik surgery done. I'm considering having it done, and wanted to talk with some folks who have aready had it done.

How long did it take your eyes to return to "normal" after surgery?

What side effects?

Have you ever had to have it redone?

Best thing?

Worst thing?

My boss was telling me yesterday that after you got it you had to keep getting touch-ups or something. I thought someone on here said that once you got it you could never wear contacts again.

I have had Lasik surgery and the best advice I could give someone is to find a GOOD optical surgeon. Do your research.

When I left the doctor's office after the procedure I could see fine and immediately had better than perfect vision (if that is possible!) I just had to wear some protective cover for a couple days and that was it. But the effects of the surgery are immediate. Doesn't hurt afterwards and the surgery is painless. I did not have any side affects.

I can't think of any negatives from the whole procedure. The best thing? You technically have better than perfect vision.

I have never heard of having "touch ups" My parents have had it for a couple years and I think all they have done is go in for normal checkups.

And JoininKC? Why would you need to wear contacts?

My boyfriend had lasik surgery & shortly after developed diabetes, which affects his vision & causes him to wear glasses anyway. He could've worn contacts but he doesn't need them all the time. Good luck with your decision!

Totally irrelevant but thanks for sharing.

When I had an evaluation for it, the doc told me that they couldn't guarantee that I'd get 20/20 vision and that if I needed corrective lenses, it couldn't be in the form of contacts. His conclusion was that, if I'm doing fine with contacts now, I might as well wait. If at some point my eyes reject contacts, then I could consider lasik.

I also know people who have had to have touch ups. Not everybody, but some. I would guess that could happen if your eyes continue to get worse. Mine have had the same prescription for about 10 years now, so I wasn't too worried about that part.

Actually it isn't. You should consider all possible consequences that could happen after a surgery. Some people don't realize what else out there could affect your eyesight even after you have lasik surgery.

Anyway, time to put you on 'Ignore' again.

This link that Senusret posted had lots of "testimonials" about lasik. I posted in there before, but I'll add here that I had the surgery about 7 years ago. Everything went well, but I'm back in glasses again because of astigmatism (started wearing them about 3 years ago - also have some for the computer because I'm on it all day at work). I don't wear them all the time - usually when I'm driving at night and need that "sharpness". Last eye checkup, I asked the doc why did it seem like the astigmatism was getting worse, and his belief is that it wasn't all corrected through the surgery.

I don't know if I would go through the procedure again, but I am glad I had it done.

You obviously read my post so the Ignore button didn't work for you. And I would love it if you did put me on ignore.

Now let me break it down for you since I am sure you will read this post anyway:

Your boyfriend got Lasik and you made a post about vision deterioration due to diabetes. Your post was about diabetes. Someone's vision gets worse due to diabetes. The lasik has no point in there. Replace that line with anything else and your post still works evidently because it was about his vision loss due to diabetes.

Basically you decided to post about your winner of a boyfriend in this thread and wanted an excuse to do so - that excuse was lasik.

Congrats Einstein.

-Rudey
--PS if your boyfriend decides to get on a treadmill it might help with the diabetes.

How often do you read people's posts when they are on ignore? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of it?

*snort* I remain pleased that I haven't yet hacked Rudey off enough to make him take notice of me.

My roommate just had the alternative to Lasik done (PRK? PKT? anyone?) He's a Marine, and had it done through them - apparently it's more permanent/trauma resistant than Lasik, but it's also more expensive and more painful.

He explained it as basically having the extra layers buffed off the cornea, vs. Lasik, which cuts the layers with a laser. His doctor explained that the resulting scar tissue from Lasik can cause vision issues later (esp. in someone like him, who has a lot of years between here and old age during which his vision can change) and that the methodology involved in Lasik can cause problems if there's blunt force trauma to the eye area later. Which is why the military prefers not to use Lasik - they do kind of specialize in blunt force trauma.

At any rate, that's just info from my roommate, and he knocked a girl up, so take that with a grain of salt. I'd probably want to talk to a family friend who was an eye doctor, or go to a couple informational sessions, or something - to get more info from a reputable source.

I did hear that the burning eye smell during Lasik is both gross and alarming.
