China
Did China really just say they would escalate to nuclear weapons if the U.S. didn't back down on Taiwan? Oh man, I knew this would happen. I need to learn to French and move to a neutral country. (Like Belgium)

Come to South Africa. You won't get killed by terrorists or another country. However, you might get killed by a burglar or a hijacker.

There are basically two Chinese views of China. One is that whereever a nation uses the Chinese alphabet, and if that nation was once part of China, then it still is Chinese. This is the view taken by the current Chinese government, and that means that they consider Taiwan part of China.
There is another view that is really a collection of local views. This is a more accurate representation of China; a collection of different nations. During most of China's history, these nations were seperate. Only when there is a strong authoritarian dynasty are these seperate nations united.
My opinion is that the rise of China is greatly overrated for two reasons. The first is that I believe that India will pass it sooner than many people believe. The other reason is that if China liberalizes its society, seperatist movements (plural. very plural.) will be able to use democracy to devolve the centralized rule intil "China" is basically no more than the EU of its constituent nations.

Taiwan was the bastion of Chang Kiasheck (SIC) during WWII as the American backed Chinese Govt. a Democratic Country. It does stick in their Craw that They dont have it. China sells more Buicks that the US does and have 4-5 plants there.
China is one of the Main Communist inspired Countrys along with Cuba and North Korea. They are not giving up on the rule by the few but are working to take over many things by buying them. UNOCAL? Oil Company and IBM, ETAL.
Now, maybe what Russ was refering to, was the rise of Nuculear capability?
The main ones there are N. Korea, India, Pakasatan, and of course China. Throw in Iran for a bit of spice.
Remeber, Communist Countrys want to control. Look at what happened to the USSR when it finally gave up the countrys it held in the fold of servitude. Now a like of hell has broken out with the new self Governed Countrys selling weapons to third world countys and terrorists.
Some may agrue that the US is doing the same thing but, that is saying We want to spread Democracy I guess.

Chiang Kai-shek's Taiwan was defiantely not a democratic nation. The one party rule in Taiwan ended in 1991.

Why am I buying what you are saying... No pun intended...
At any rate, many in the northern parts of China that are very rural are extremely poor and are dying due to starvation and poor nutrition. Health stats are coming out left and right about it ever since the Chinese government found out it can get a lot more money for treatment of Avian Flu from the WHO and US than for technology--besides, they will "bootleg" the drugs once they've determined its components...
Avian flu has not been a huge issue yet in India, but it is just a matter of time... And it will hit Bangeldesh and Myramar first regardless of their recovery from the tsunamis and HIV...
However for some reason, I think the US is going psychotic and will stop some of this "outsourcing" business or at least "limit" it to some level. It won't affect the economies of the companies overseas. It will affect the US, though...
