Question Leadership Development: How Do We Do It and Who Should Be Involved?

How would you rate your organization (DST, Kappa, NCNW, NAACP, etc.) in providing avenues for new leadership on national, regional (district, province), and local levels? Are you seeing the same faces/names on the campaign trail? Do you wonder exactly how you would get involved? Have you ever considered running for office yourself or do you think of it as something only "certain" people are "asked" to do?

If there are things about your organization's nomination/election process that you'd like to change (without going into too much detail of course) what would they be and how do you think your proposed changes would benefit your organization?

I think the avenues and opportunities in DST are clear and wide open for people to assume leadership positions - however, I don't think we are bringing in women with sufficient leadership skills or those that are willing to learn and have their leadership potential developed (both collegiate and alumnae levels).

I don't know about other organizations, but Alpha Kappa Alpha has leadership training modules along with other mandates. After successfully completing the modules and fulfilling the other requirements, one will then qualify to run. This training can be done locally, regionally or (inter)nationally (undgergraduate or graduate). So, if the person who has come in does not possess the skills, she can be trained.

Sorors, if you haven't completed your training, you should do so.
