A Lenoir-Rhyne College student was killed in a single-car accident while driving to Melbourne, Fla., for Thanksgiving.
Brandon Killingsworth, a 21-year-old junior, was on his way home to see family, said Anita Johnson Gwin, vice president for student affairs.
The accident occurred about 4:10 a.m. Wednesday on Interstate 95 near Walterboro, S.C., Gwin said. Killingsworth was traveling south when his 2004 Chevrolet pickup truck drifted into the median and struck a tree, said Lance Cpl. P.J. Brouthers of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Killingsworth was pronounced dead at the scene. His fiancée, 19-year-old Shannon Brophy of Baltimore, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is hospitalized at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Gwin said.
Brophy is also a student at L-R.
“I knew Brandon best from the press box at L-R football games,” said Andrew Weisner, L-R pastor. “He was a very kind fellow, very dear. He was full of kindness, very friendly and had a warm and welcoming smile.”
“He was probably the nicest guy in the world; he had no enemies,” Gwin said. “It’s sad.”
Killingsworth was a member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, an intramural referee and a member of the athletic events staff at the college.
