Stony Brook Student Dead

Olivia Winslow

November 11, 2003

A student was found dead yesterday morning in a remote corner of the academic mall at Stony Brook University in an apparent suicide, university and police officials said yesterday.

University spokesman Patrick Calabria said the body of a male student, a freshman, was found about 10 a.m. by a passerby, who notified university police. They alerted Suffolk County police. Calabria said the student's name was being withheld until his family had been notified.

Calabria said the student was reported missing by his parents during the weekend. He said it was the first suicide on campus since 1992.

Officer Robert Boden, Suffolk County police spokesman, said the student was found dead on the east side of the Melville library building. "It's apparently a suicide," Boden said.

The medical examiner's office would not disclose the manner of death.

In an e-mail message to the campus community, University President Shirley Strum Kenny said, "It is with profound sadness that I inform you of the death of one of our commuter students, the result of an apparent suicide. I know I speak for the entire campus community when I say our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the student. As always, in a tragedy such as this, students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to avail themselves of the services provided by the University Counseling Center ..."
