(taken from Theta Delta Chi International webpage - UMass Dartmouth, Iota Triton Colony):
"In October of 2003, three of our six founding members were watching the movie Van Wilder.
Someone said, "Hey, we should start a fraternity!"
We all laughed and agreed. The next day we joked about it some more and more the next day. Then somewhere down the line no one was joking anymore. The six of us became very serious about starting a fraternity that wasn't like any the campus offered. We wanted a real Brotherhood, something that was active in and gave back to the community while strengthening the bonds between us. At the time there was no such fraternity at UMass Dartmouth. Now there is and we loving call it Theta Delta Chi, Iota Triton colony.
I'm sure one might think that's a strange way to start an organization (while watching a comedy) but we've never been more serious. Currently we have 11 brothers and 5 pledges, all of who are devoted to taking this fraternity far beyond any single person could. In our seven months we have had numerous fundraisers both for the fraternity and as philanthropy projects. We work hard and play hard, but we do it as brothers. "
