U of South Carolina de-recognizes ATO Chapter

The U of South Carolina has de-recognized the ATO chapter there; see

http://www.dailygamecock.com/news/it...n-drug-charges

Excerpts from article ^^”

“USC has closed its chapter of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity until 2016 due to drug charges against the chapter, according to university officials.
The chapter is no longer recognized by USC as a student organization and members will not be allowed to live in its Greek Village house next semester.

. . . . the fraternity’s chief executive officer, said Monday afternoon that he was shocked by the verdict and the university’s handling of the situation.”

Sounds a little extreme to me. Looks like there will be 3 empty houses next year. Sad.

Are the closed chapters' houses just sitting empty, or has another group moved in? Also, since they are on U property who calls the shots about future use (as in will the groups get their house back if they return)?

Old thread, but it has to be an agreement between the house owner and the university. The owner can't allow in any group without the university's consent, and the university can't force the owner to accept anyone. However, the owner probably would like to receive rent instead of the house just sitting empty, so I would assume they'd let in anyone that can pay the dues. It is true, 3 houses (Sigep, ATO, and Lambda Chi) now sit empty so I don't really know where the Greek Life Director really thinks Greek Life at Carolina is going. They were suppose to begin construction on some houses across the street from the original Greek Village. They need fraternities and sororities to fill those houses. All the sororities currently reside in houses, and the fraternities that had the money and bodies to fill a house (DTD was looking into getting a house in Phase II of the GV), are also in houses (Of course, not ATO, Sigep, and Lambda Chi). Pike may look to snatch a house since they lost theirs to Phi Mu.
