Sam's Candy Recruitment

I have been creeping on Greek Chat for about a month now and have been obsessed with reading the recruitment stories. I just started going through recruitment this week so I decided to write my own story. I will be using the names of my favorite candies to represent the sororities in this story. This is going to be a live story, obviously so it will be probably updated every day this weekend.

First off, I go to a small private university in the north and we only have 5 sororities so it isn’t super competitive like at southern schools. We have like 70 people going through, which from what I’ve read is like the size of some pledge classes at other schools. Even though it is small at my school Greek life is a really big deal. So obviously I’m freaking out a little (or a lot) about getting a bid.

The Sororities will be known as
Swedish Fish
Snickers
Sour Patch Kids
Three Musketeers
Starbursts

Recruitment started on Wednesday and we had about a half hour long meeting about the rules and procedures and such. Then on Thursday we had a meet and greet with all the sororities and it was an hour long. We spent 10 minutes with each sorority and here was what I thought of them after it.

Swedish Fish- I loved them. I already knew like 6 of these girls through cheerleading and they are some of my best friends but I got to meet a few more of them and I had great conversations with them all.

Snickers- I love these girls as well, I knew a few of them already and we talked about where we were living next year and their conventions and retreats. They really seemed passionate about their sisterhood.

Sour Patch Kids- I was really surprised by these girls. I didn’t know that many of them and had heard some stories about them on campus. Although I tried to not listen to the stories sometimes it is hard not to but when I met them they were all so sweet and they really seemed to love each other. And I had a conversation about hockey with one of the girls which definitely impressed me.

Three Musketeers- I knew none of these girls before going so they automatically had to really impress me, as bad as that sounds. I knew girls from all of the other sororities before recruitment started even if it was only a few, but I knew none of these girls so I already figured I would not like them because if I didn’t know any of them then obviously we weren’t into the same things. I did try to give them a chance and keep an open mind though. However when I went to meet them I didn’t like them very much at all. Granted the girls all seemed very nice and they all seemed to love each other but I instantly knew I didn’t fit in with them.

Starbursts- I knew a couple girls from this one already and they always seemed so passionate about it so I was very excited to learn more about them. I was intimidated by them though because they all seemed so perfect and put together.

After this night I was stressed and it was only an hour long, so I was freaking out because I had five hours the next night and didn’t know how I was going to be able to handle it.

So today was the five hour night and we spent 40 minutes with each chapter. This is what I thought of them tonight.

Swedish Fish- I LOVED these girls. Every one of them was so welcoming and energetic. I had great conversations with them about everything from cheerleading to photography to food. Their ice breaker was a lot of fun and they made me laugh so hard that I almost peed my pants. They were honestly so nice and I definitely want to be invited back tomorrow.

Snickers- I was slightly disappointed with these girls. I loved them last night and at recruitment events before formal recruitment started, and I always loved talking to them on campus. Tonight they didn’t impress me though. They didn’t talk much at all which disappointed me but I think it was because they had so many games and stations for us, it didn’t really leave much time for talking. However I still really like them and would love to be invited back I just hope they talk more with us tomorrow.

Sour Patch Kids- I still liked this group a lot. They were a lot of fun. I didn’t have as great of conversations with them tonight as I did last night but I definitely had fun with them and would like to get to know them better. And they served great punch!

Three Musketeers- Again this group was disappointing. The conversations were ok, and I liked a few of them but I just never clicked with them.

Starbursts- I had fun with these girls but was also slightly disappointed with them. I still like them but I talked mostly to the ones I already knew because they kind of took me under their wing. They introduced me to some other people but no one in my group really got to talk to a lot of them because all of the sisters seemed more interested in talking to the other sisters rather than us. I am hoping that if I get invited back that I get to know more of the girls and that they become more interested in us and not just their sisters.

So at the end of tonight I picked my top 4, they were:
Swedish Fish
Snickers
Sour Patch Kids
Starbursts
I’m very excited for tomorrow. It will be a very long day but I can’t wait to see which houses I’m invited back to and to meet more of the girls.

Pay attention to this one, sororities!!! Rushees want to talk just as person to person more than anything.

Although I am sick of looking at candy at work, I'm liking this story.

So today we had house rounds. We could be invited back to up to four houses. All day I had knots in my stomach, and I just wanted to see which ones had invited me back. When we got to our meeting spot our rho gammas took us each individually to another area to show us who invited us back. As each girl in my group was called over I got more and more nervous. When my Rho Gamma called me over I saw that my list said

Snickers
Sour Patch Kids
Starbursts

At first I was slightly disappointed that Swedish Fish cut me but I realized that as much as I loved these girls I also loved a lot of the girls in other sororities and that if they cut me then it obviously was just not the right place for me.

With that house rounds began. We had an hour with each sorority that we were invited to. Walking to their houses in the snow and waiting outside until it was time for them to let us in was not the most enjoyable experience but it was worth it. This is what I thought of each chapter today.

Snickers- This was the first house I went to and instantly when I walked in the door I felt like I was at home. It was so much fun. When we walked in they split us into groups and gave us house tours. From the outside of the house it looked so small but when we got inside I realized it was actually huge. It was like a maze to get to all of the rooms, but I was really impressed with it. They told us about their philanthropy which I absolutely love. Then we watched a power point about the sorority and it was so sweet, I almost got a little teary eyed. It was obvious that they all loved each other and were all best friends. Then I had a conversation about my favorite books with one of the sisters, and they all laughed at me as I attempted to finish eating half of a giant cookie before walking out the door. They also complimented my polar bear hat, which made me very happy. I definitely loved this group of girls and could see myself as one of them. They made me feel very welcome. I really hope I get invited back tomorrow.

Sour Patch Kids- This was the second house I visited. I thought the house was very nice and that the girls were very nice but I just didn’t feel the connection to them. They served great food, and we did a fun icebreaker with M&Ms. We also made Valentine’s Day cards for their philanthropy which was fun. I was disappointed that I didn’t connect to them more because I really thought they were such a nice group of girls.

Starbursts- This was the last house I visited. When I walked up to the house I was in awe. It seriously looked like a castle to me. We talked to them for a little while in this big room and I met a lot of girls who I hadn’t met already. They were all very sweet and they seemed more talkative and less cliquey today. They didn’t keep to themselves like they did yesterday which was a good thing. I got a ton of compliments on my Pandora bracelet and compared mine to like 3 of the sisters’ bracelets. They also gave me compliments on my shirt but I’m guessing that was mostly because it was their color. They gave us house tours. The house was beautiful inside and I swear my jaw dropped every time I walked into a new room. In every apartment in the house they had a group of like 5 girls who talked to us about different aspects of the sorority, I thought this was very nice because it helped us to learn more about the sorority and it helped us to get to know them better because they were in smaller groups. It was obvious that these girls were extremely passionate about their sorority. I could definitely feel the love in that house and could see myself there.

At the end of the day we got to pick three that we liked to go back to tomorrow. Since I only had three it was not a tough decision. I’m hoping to get invitations back tomorrow. Tomorrow is preference rounds so it is a little nerve wracking but I feel like I made a good impression on them so now I just have to wait and see.

Today was preference rounds. When my rho gamma showed me my card it said.

Sour Patch Kids

I was very disappointed to only see one chapter listed and was surprised that it was Sour Patch Kids I had felt that my conversations at Snickers and Starbursts had been better and I had been much more excited about them throughout the weekend. For a brief second I thought about dropping out of recruitment and just trying again in the fall. But then I remember what everyone I knew had told me constantly before recruitment started. “Keep an open mind” So I decided to go to the preference party and give them another chance. This is what I thought:

Sour Patch Kids- They made me feel very special and like I wasn’t just another girl, like they cared about us all as individuals which I was very impressed with. There rituals were almost enough to make me cry because they were so sweet and so special. Then the sisters shared their stories with us and it made me cry. They loved their sisters so much and I felt like I wanted to be a part of their sisterhood.

At the end of the night I put on my paper that I would accept a bid from them. I will find out tomorrow if I get a bid. I’m very nervous but excited for tomorrow.
