Random Question...
I can't remember if this is a national policy or not. Does your chapter stand for alumnae when they walk into a room?

it depends how old the alums are for our chapter. if they're like from nationals or an advisor yes. if it's someone from our chapter who's recently gone through order, no. . .it's too weird ha ha ha. . .our chapter is fairly young and we don't have many alums coming back to visit.

i guess i should clarify just a little. we had a bunch of sisters go through order in december for various reasons (one of whom was my roommate). if they decided to come to chapter in the spring since they were still on campus we didn't stand when they entered the suite. i know a lot of us seniors who were in their pledge class didn't feel they were really "alum" since they hadn't graduated yet, even though they technically were by NHQ standards.
now say some one who'd graduated the previous year had come to chapter we would have stood. does that make sense?

you absolutely always stand to recognize an alumna who enters a room regardless of what the event or where it is held.
example: founder's day get together with your local alumnae chapter. collegiates stand everytime another alumnae member enters the room.
your last meeting of the year and the seniors have already gone through order, you stand and recognize the alumnae present at the beginning of the meeting, even if it's an informal meeting.
standing is a sign of respect towards alumnae members and should be a commonplace in your chapter.

ps - and it's pretty nice to feel so special when you are a young alumnae walking into a room of collegiates.

The semester after I went alum I came back to the house for initiation. It was a slap in the face when no one stood for me, especially considering that another alum was there & when she walked in the room one of the girls said "everyone stand for the alum in the room."
Maybe its just because I'm so much younger than she was but it still hurt regardless.

I went alum because I left school, not because I graduated. I know that's not ideal, but it is what it is. That said, I went back a semester or so later to visit the chapter. When I entered the room, mostly everyone stood up for me but one sister (whom, might I add, was in my pledge class and I thought was a friendly girl) was VERY snottily like "Don't stand up for HER! ". I thought it was very rude. Regardless of the circumstances, alum is alum. I was told that after I left, she got chewed out. Oh well. She'll understand when she goes back right aftershe graduates and no one stands up for her.

At our chapter we don't stand everytime an alum walks into a room but when they are introduced. Do you guys stand everytime an alum walks into a room or just the first time they walk into a room (alum are helping out at recruitment and they are constantly in and out of the house, do you stand everytime they come in)

only the first time they walk into the room. but each day you do that. so if rush is three days long, you stand an recognize each day the first time they come into the house. or, like i said above, when they are announced at a meeting. it's up to the chapter.
but like everyone said, when their sisters don't stand, it's offensive and hurtful so try to make it a general rule and enforce it if it's not already in place in your chapter. good etiquette to teach new members too.

At our chapter, we make it a big deal to stand for alums. It is definitely a respect thing. Even if they are still on campus and haven't graduated yet. If they have gone through Order, they are alum and deserve all of the rights and priveliges therein.
