Marie Claire article?

From alphaphi.org:

Regarding Recent Marie Claire Article
Alpha Phi International is aware of the negative reference on page 148 of the December 2007 issue of
Marie Claire. We are currently seeking advice from outside professionals, and we will consider their counsel as we deliberate the nature of response that is in the best interest of our organization.

So I haven't heard about this...anyone know what's up???

There was an article in Marie Claire about the history of drinking and it used your crest on the timeline. From the article:
The girls of Alpha Phi at Syracuse establish the first "women's fraternity house." Drunken hookups ensue.

That's really stupid, and if I remember my NPC group founding dates/multudinous pissing contests on GC, not in the least accurate.

Leave it to my sisters to know about the articles involving drinking.

Crest? Whoa.

I'm curious to see what action will be taken by Alpha Phi IHQ.

Hypothetically, if an Alpha Phi works for the magazine and contributed to the article, could any action be taken against the magazine since members are allowed to wear/use the crest after initiation?

I was curious so I decided to look up information on their crest:

http://alphaphi.org/about_us/symbolsofalphaphi.html

Quote:
The Fraternity Crest
The Fraternity Crest is the Alpha Phi coat-of-arms, adopted by Convention delegates in 1922. The shield is Bordeaux with a scroll and ivy leaf above it. Inscribed on the scroll is the public motto, Union hand in hand. A bar of silver crosses the shield from left to right; the upper half of the shield contains a Roman lamp in silver and the lower half, Ursa Major. The meaning of the symbols depicted on the crest is a significant part of the ritual witnessed at initiation. The use of the Fraternity crest is reserved for jewelry, sportswear and other Fraternity equipment befitting the dignity and honor of Alpha Phi’s heritage.

We are allowed to wear it on our person (clothes and jewelry) but what I was always told it was in a more formal setting--"badge attire"

Even though we are allowed to use it after initiation, I seriously doubt we would be allowed to put it in a magazine. I think its the same logic as not being in the media (news, etc) wearing our letters.

WOW @ the Marie Claire article. I seriously hope an Alpha Phi doesn't work at the magazine, because I wouldn't want one of my sisters being associated with that!

Even if an Alpha Phi did work at the magazine, she would not have the ability to authorize the use of the crest in a magazine. It's either trademarked or copyrighted...either way, the magazine would have needed expressed permission from the executive office to use it legitimately...and something makes me think they didn't.
