I made the comment I did because I felt like she jumped to a rash conclusion and made an assumption that many non-Greeks make who are not fond of the Greek Community. In other words- she seems to have assumed that since some pledges did something dumb, they must have been ordered to do it by the fraternity.
I did not mean to be rude to her, and I apologize if I was- but I don't like the idea of rushing to judgment about this.
We Greeks have enough trouble dealing with people who want to get rid of us. So I do not like seeing anyone within the community jump to conclusions prematurely at the expense of a fellow GLO.
As for the issue of why it was newsworthy that the nude women were African-American, it is a detail that would inflame and upset a lot of people reading about the incident.
But at the same time, it is fair to question whether or not part of the "shock" the guys were going for was to be white guys showing off nude photos of black women.
Whether they intended any racial overtones or not, a reasonable person would have known that this would be assumed by anyone who ever read about the incident.
Then again, we are not talking about reasonable people here.
Most of all this just really sucks since Chi Phi was a good house when I was at Georgia (and still is to my knowledge.) We all do dumb stuff, but this kind of activity crosses a very clear line. Greeks at Georgia are generally well respected, and this kind of thing hurts that very much.
Having spent most of my college time at Texas where Greeks are NOT highly regarded by non-Greeks or many University staff, I am witness to the great value to Greek organizations to be a valued part of a campus.
This kind of thing really tears that down. Whether Chi Phi ordered this behavior or not- the fact the pledges were associated with the group has created some really bad PR for Greeks in general.
And so it is important to find out who really ordered this, or if it was just a dumb idea that some pledges came up with on their own. Time will tell the outcome, but in the meantime I will keep an open mind.
