Letter to Amy Dickinson ("Ask Amy")

I'm just wondering if anyone else saw the letter in today's "Ask Amy" about fraternities and sororities (the third letter). Basically, it was a screed on how terrible sororities (and fraternities) have become, concluding with "Greek = bad rap." (He was responding to Amy's advice to a grandmother who wanted her granddaughter to pledge a sorority, but the granddaughter didn't want to because on her campus the Greek system had a "bad name.") I thought her response to the guy, while short, was good. I was sorry for his fraternity that he put his own letters in his signature.

For reference, the letter from the grandmother that this guy was referring to is here.

Huh. That guy sounds very bitter and his letter is downright nasty. Why on earth would he have included his affiliation?? It doesn't sound like it's something he's at all proud of.

Off-topic, but MysticCat, I love your signature! My mom has an old tape of those SNL commercials and my sister and I just loved them. I'd kind of forgotten about them, actually.

Sounded like he has a grudge against that fraternity and wanted to paint them in a bad light to me....

Anywho, I loved this part of her reply:
"and have never wanted to be in a group that would have me as a member."

Do you happen to have the orginal article with the advise from the grandmother? Because judging by what this guy is saying, it must paint Greek Life in a good light.

Thank you Dani. Very intelligent reply I think as well to that. And As for the guys in the first article, I love how he didn't mention that NonGreeks are just as bad, and in fact are worst when it comes to parting then most Greeks.

I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts that TB isn't a Sigma Pi, but has chosen a fraternity to smear.

Interesting thought. I tend to think, though, that he has a grudge -- although maybe it's a grudge against Sigma Pi for not giving him a bid -- and has come to "reject" his fraternity experience.

Oops. Sorry.

And one thing I'm thinking might be possible is maybe he was expelled from Sig Pi for the behavior he is condemning and is trying to get revenge.

"Dropping ecstacy?"

WTH - I thought ecstacy was pills - how does one "drop" that? I thought you just... you know. "Through the teeth and over the tongue, look out stomach, here it comes."

Maybe I am very naieve about drugs. It's possible.

Ecstasy is a pill. But they call the process of taking it dropping it.

I've heard of people taking ecstasy like they take a pill. I've never heard of "dropping" it.

Interesting.

Maaaaybe it's just me, but I really can't trust someone who bases "Greek life today" off of his 1991 experience.

I couldn't tell if it was a really bad attempt at sarcasm or if he was being for real.

I'm pretty sure he was being sarcastic and for real.
