Question To Mystic Cat32

Hey, bro.

Can you tell me a little more about Pres. Ramsey's remarks that you referenced in the other thread on Social vs. Non-Social GLO's. I must admit that I'm a little confused about him saying that brothers in FMA cannot join other social fraternities, but could join a professional group such as MFE. While I think that ought to be the case -- and I think it will have to be if we join the NIC -- it doesn't seem to agree with our national documents, at least if the versions at Lyrecrest Online are current. The Constitution states:

SECTION TWO. Eligibility.
The spirit of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia enjoins that the opportunity of becoming a Sinfonian be offered to as many men as possible regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, disability or religion, who, through a love for music, can assist in the further fulfillment of our fraternity’s purposes and ideals either by adopting music as a profession, or by working to advance the cause of music in America. However, no man may be considered who is a member of any other secret national fraternal society in music, nor can he join any such organization so long as he remains a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

And the General Regulations for Chapters states:

SECTION SIX. Conflicting Memberships.
No chapter shall pledge or initiate any man who is a member of any other secret national fraternal society in music, and each man pledged shall agree not to join any such secret national fraternal society in music so long as he remains a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

I can't find any official prohibition on membership in another social fraternity. Do you have any more info? Thanks!

Fraternally Yours in FMA,
MysticCat81

I think it breaks down like this. We are social and since any other social fraternity will not accept a member of another social fraternity we are not eligible to rush in any other IFC organizations. I guess that we could theoretically but would not be accepted being social. Some brothers have bypassed this because they as well as the other social fraternity have thought that Sinfonia is professional. I know of two guys that have fallen into this. One guy is also in Sigma Nu and the other is also in Kappa Sigma. Dr. Ramsey was actually recently initiated into Kappa Kappa Psi as an honorary initiate through special invitation so you can join other GLOs but not social. I'm at the University of North Texas so I see Dr. Ramsey quite often. I hope this helps bro. Feel free to check out our website at www.sinfonia.net/gammatheta If you click on pics I'm the guy in the glider preparing to taxi out of Moriarity, New Mexico and the guy rock climbing. I'm also the guy in the middle of the serenade with the blonde in the pink top. Fraternally yours in Phi Mu and Alpha, Marc

Really interesting -- thanks for the info. It does help. I hope the NIC affiliation indeed comes to pass -- we had only one brother in our chapter who pledged another fraternity (LCA), but the rest of us all thought "why we do we need another fraternity... we're already in the best."

I'll check out your web-site, too. Take it easy, bro!
