I Just Hit The Public Service Lottery!!!
All right folks, you all have the winning lottery ticket in your hand worth $300 Million.
You cannot spend any of it on yourself or your family. It can only go to the less fortunate or to improve an area of society.
How would you spend that money? What areas of society are you going to improve?
No statues erected in your honor.

Dang no statute...and it was gonna have me throwing up the Delta ....oh well....:P
At my church, I would put in my 10%, establish a better scholarship fund, and help out the Young Adult Ministries.
As far as an area of society.....Hygiene( teeth and body) clinics offered in select cities to start out. You know like the Colgate Better Smiles Vans....but of course offering more services than just teeth cleaning.
In conjunction with that mobile clinic, I would like to have established as another thrust - a "Ready to Work" program. Since it is a more in depth program, the alumnae chapters will have control over it, but the collegiate chapters have to help run it. The "Ready to Work" program is helping women get on the road to the workforce and off of Gov't assistance - either by Track 1: Workforce preparations - Interview training, wardrobe planning, and resume workshops. or Track 2: Educational preparations - Get a GED or college degree, Interview training, wardrobe planning, and resume workshops.
How each program functions will differ, but each program will be given a "Ready to Work" percentage to meet.
Are you sure I can't have at least a little bit to get some food, clothes, or to fix my squeaky brakes?

I would spend the money on the infrastructure and supply chain of the public school system in my hometown of Philly. However, the fund would be administered by an entity independent of the city, state or school board.

Another good question, CT4!
I have always said that if I ever came into a huuuuuuugggge sum of money that I would build an apartment complex for the homeless, where they can stay rent free for about 6 months. During this time, they should be able to find a job (even if it's only at McDonald's) and save a little bit of money toward a security deposit or small down payment on a home. I would provide some clothing as well, and bring in someone to teach on interviewing skills, dressing for success, and help those that need help with furthering their education.
So many times, homeless people have had an unfortunate turn of events that has caused them to be in their situation, and I'd like to help get them back on their feet.

I agree with Niax, I would give my 10% to my church. Since I grew up in a community that didn't have anything for the children and still don't, I would build a communty center. The center will consist of various activities for the children that would better them in life, not just a rec center. I would also have a drug rehabilitation ctr. I have seen too many people hit rock bottom. I would also give to my high school cheerleading squad, where we wasn't included in the budget. In that, I would include a scholarship. Last but not least, I would purchase transportation for the AA organizations on my college campus.

HIV/AIDS
I would put it all into AIDS awareness, prevention, and services in the African American community.

Let's see. . . .
$100 Million to AIDS research and awareness, maybe all of it to research. Some people just don't want to protect themselves so I'm starting to think that our best bet would be to just find a cure.
$100 Million to cancer research.
$99.9 Million to provide empowerment and enrichment centers in low income communities.
$100,000 to Florida A & M University to provide scholarships to current students who have shown an improvement in academic performance. At, FAMU it's easier to get a scholarship before you get here than it is once you've shown what you can do.

I would give half of the winnings to the Breast Cancer and Diabetes research foundation.
With the other half, I would start a Tutoring Program for the inner city children. Math, Science and Reading would be the main focus of the program.

$300 Million you say....
and I can't spend it on my self or family...how about friends?
If I can't spend it on friends, then I would set up an interest baring account for $100 million to provide quality education to all children less fortunate. I support charter school that communities open to help their communities. The money will be there to support them and like Soror NiaX said, it would be managed by an independent agency.
Another $100 will go toward HIV/Aids research
$50 Million for Breast Cancer and $50 Million to Support HBCU's, HSI (Hispanic Serving Institutions), Community Based Organizations (CBO's) and small businesses.
Yea, that's what I would do...
But if a sista could spend it on herself and the fam...well..that's a whole new can of worms

I would take $50 million of it and put it toward the City School system here in Rochester, NY. Its pretty bad when they lay-off the school Librarians and Guidance Counselors.
I would take another $100 million and build a Fun Plex.
the Fun plex will have a movie theater, skating rink, bowling alley, and shopping center. I would set up a program to hire people from the innercity only. While giving the community something to do it will also help with economy. I also want to set up a program to hire teens in the inbetween age 13-15. Too old to go to summer camp and too young to get a job. Then that would get them off the streets.
Id take 50 million and build a new Art building at Hampton cause ours was falling apart. Can I name it after me?? lol!
And with the rest set up a program for young women from the 9th to 12th grade that works on their self esteem, confidence, basically learning their self-worth, it would also teach them about health, money, and the importance of education. And if they kept their grades above a 3.0 in High school and completed the program all four years I would give them a free ride to college and a stipend each year as long as they kept the 3.0.

Wow, I love this thread.
$75,000,000 for the MLK memorial.
$25,000,000 for Calvin Coolidge Sr. High School (my alma mater)
$50,000,000 for Georgetown University
****A good amount for scholarships for African American men, since I benefitted from one myself.
****An endowed professorship to attact prominent black writers to the school
Wow, I still have 150 million left over.....
25 mil for mental health and wellness programs.
25 mil for the Whitman Walker Clinics
oh to heck with it......
50 million to Alpha Phi Alpha and 50 million to Alpha Phi Omega. They'll know better than me where the money can best be spent. Alpha can spend it externally if they want, but APO MUST use it for technology enhancements, historical purposes, building maintenance, and field staff.

Of course, I would give 10% to the church as tithe and another 5% specifically for Christian health and wellness programs (for example promoting healthy lifestyles in the African American community as well as programs that help people break addiction habits.) I would then use 100 million to set up a foundation to that supports educating disadvantaged youth from a very early age. Starting at possibly pre-k in target neighborhoods programs similar to HeadStart will give kids the chance to experience things such as out-of-state field trips and a very rich education from the beginning. This foundation will require that the parents be at least partially involved in the program (e.g they have to sign that the children are doing their work.) A large portion of the funds will be used to establish private schools that serve a complete education K-12 in certain communities Everything will be free as long as the parents stay committed to monitor their children's progress. Evrything from SAT prep to interviewing skills will be taught. The program will continue to fund itself based upon investments made with the initial 100 million. I would also use another 50 million to establish an auxillary (sp?) fund that would improve the condition of existing elementary and middle schools in low imcome African American communities. I believe it is very important to try to fix education problems at a young age in order to solve the root of the problem not the symptoms.
I would then use another 100 million to establish low rent housing in nice communities as well as provide assistance in job training and placement. The remaining 5 million I would use to support higher education and study abroad scholarships for blacks.
Sorry this is so detailed, but that is a lot of money!

Great Question!
First, I would start a program for single teen and (God help us) pre-teen mothers. Focusing on :
> getting a diploma or GED
> education on care for their children and themselves
> self esteem building workshops
> sex education
> work on achieving what ever future goals they have: going to college, achieving a career, etc..
Second, I would develop centers in various neighborhoods for people, especially the elderly, to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Focusing on:
> Exercising and staying healthy
> proper diet and nutrition
> socializing
> Staying mentally active
Third, I would have to institute a state wide sex education and disease prevention program. The myths people have about sex, even as adults are ridiculous and dangerous. Focusing on:
> What is catagoized as sex
> How to be safe
> Diseases
> Birth Control
> Self Respect
Forth, I have to help our public school systems since ever year they cut more money from the budget for school.
Finally, I would contribute to the arts and culture department; helping to introduce art and culture to those who may not have known it otherwise.
I guess I am out of money, so I will go.

What I would do with this money
Is create an intense school enrichment program for girls, starting around 9 or 10 years of age and continuing through high school. There would be a selective process to get young women, with interviews. I'd look at interviews, grades, motivation and self-discipline.
Tutoring in all subjects -- with an emphasis on standard English. Learning to master the SAT and other standardized testing (which I think is highly critical because affirmative action will go away within the next 20 or so years) so our scores can be on par with whites and Asian Americans.
Art and music instruction, which has been slashed to h*** in California. Life lessons, including how to dress, manners, etc. Also, time and place -- namely, teaching people that certain behaviors need to be left at home, within the four walls. Things our kids need for the job market.
I guess I might have some sex education as part of the life lessons, but I would emphasize contraception and pregnancy prevention. People are going to have sex. They just don't need to make babies before they have the education and skills to get jobs to support families.
