Question Moving to D.C.

Hello Sorors!
I have just taken a new job in Washington, D.C. and now I'm searching for an apartment. Any ideas on where I should look for decent housing? And what does rent for a one bedroom usually run? All ideas are appreciated and if you know of someone renting an apartment please let me know! Thank you sorors!

Hello There,
I'm not a member, but I do live right outside the city that I attended church in for almost 20 years and lived in as a small child. :-)

I briefly considered a school in the District so I'm somewhat familiar with the city.

The rent in DC all depends on what section you stay in. Also, remember there is a MD/DC/VA triangle, so many people work in one state and live in another since the Metro Area is so close together. I live in MD and work in VA (which is only 15 minutes away) and my father works in DC (also 15 minutes by car).

Basically a one bedroom can be anywhere from 400-1500. If you are near the nicer area's such as embassy row and capitol hill expect to pay more. Most anything in the Northwest area is going to cost you! If you go to www.rent.net you will be able to get more of an idea on prices.

Where in the city are you going to be working? There is a graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha in DC. Maybe you can contact them and get some assistance. Who knows, they may live in a building that's just right for you.

Best of Luck.

First off WELCOME!!!!! I am not a member but I am a resident of Maryland and have been for sometime now. Poplife was correct about the rents, they do vary mainly because of the MD/DC/VA triangle. Many people choose to commute from MD or VA because traffic is murder. I suggest that you consider that. The metro system is constantly improving and one of the improvements has been making it easier and cheaper to park and ride. There is also www.southernmanagement.com. I have a relative who is an employee with southern and I can ask her if there are any vacancies or to run a search for you if you want. DC is becoming increasingly expensive with the expansion of the metro system. Many of the areas around Howard and Downtown are being bought quickly and the rents are going up. I don't know if you also plan to go to school while working but many apartments offer discounts to students. You basically have alot of options.

Sisterfriend I hope you are able to find what you need. The triangle is a cool place to be. I came from NY so it was a nice change from the hustle and bustle. If you need any help feel free to e-mail me

Cool

Congratulations Twin/Soror! My sister is being modest - she is moving from Albany, New York to D.C. to take a position at NPR (National Public Radio)!! Thanks for all the help sister-friends it's hard when you are moving to a unknown area. You have no idea where are the places a dog wouldn't want to live and where are the hot spots. Emerald, don't forget to do a search for local newspapers for D.C. - the NY Times also has places too! Again congratulations
