Hunter college interest group

Hi everyone ,

I am a junior at Hunter college (CUNY) in nyc. I have recently formed an interest group and we are hoping to bring a National Panhellenic sorority into our campus. Its been tough and difficult, especially for me. I am the president of this newly formed club and also a newbie to this sort of thing. I have no idea what I am doing and only have an idea of what I want this club to become. That is why I am here. To learn.

I thought I read here recently about reviving the Greek system at Hunter. Definitely do a search; you might be doing more work than you need to!

If I can offer you some advice, delegate delegate delegate! If you burn out a year into this process and quit, all of your effort will have been in vain. And if you can't get enough girls interested in doing the actual work, then you don't have the interest in being an actual sorority, beyond being pretty and wearing letters. Unfortunately, you'll have plenty of that.

Do make sure you talk with the student activities office (or whoever would oversee an NPC expansion onto campus) and get them on board with your plan. Without them, you're likely fighting a losing battle.

And I'd also start looking at the various NPC groups. There are some good threads here about locals or interest groups and the process they went through to become a colony. The sororities probably can't be much help at this stage of the game, but if you understand the big picture (importance of academics, leadership, philanthropy) you might be able to mold your mission better. And if you do have a sorority you hope to become part of, DO keep that information to yourself. At least for now. I'd try to narrow down your choices to 3 or 4 but not all the way to one. You could hurt yourself in the long run.

According to my quick google research, there is currently an interest group for Chi Omega at Hunter College (maybe outdated info).

Whenever I see Hunter College mentioned somewhere, I can't help but think about the novel Marjorie Morningstar. That's all I have to add here.

This seems like a campus that, just looking at the list above, several sororities would be interested in recolonizing. There's a Beta chapter and at least one other single letter chapter. With the seeming resurgence of Greek life at NYU, maybe this is a good time to try again at Hunter.

To the OP, single letter chapters are a big deal to NPC (and probably all but I can't speak for them) sororities. They are the chapters of our founders and near founders. These women were real risk-takers and we hope to honor them by keeping their chapters open or re-opening them when we can. Which is not to say that if this campus gets a vibrant Greek system going again that only the 4 or 5 with the most personal history would be interested. Sorority expansion isn't JUST about history...

BUMP

Anyone know why all of the panhellenics left campus? There used to be a good number of them.

I assumed it was the same old "enlightened women's college doesn't need divisive things like sororities" deal.
