In the culmination of a 37-year dream, the Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated will be celebrating the
Grand Opening of its International Headquarters facility during the weekend of October 13-15, 2000 in Baltimore, Maryland.
There will be a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony at the facility, which is located at 1600 N. Calvert Street, on Saturday, October 14 at 9 AM. The ceremony will be attended by local and national dignitaries as well as hundreds Iota Brothers, family and friends.
The Headquarters Dedication Weekend will coincide with the Homecoming festivities of Morgan State University, which is the location of the Fraternity's Alpha Chapter. In addition to the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the Fraternity is sponsoring a full slate of events, including:
* A Pre-Homecoming Cabaret on Friday night at DuBurns Arena, 1301 S. Ellwood Avenue in Baltimore. The event will take place from 9 PM to 1 AM and admission will be $12.00
* A Tailgate party from 10 - Noon on Saturday morning at PSINet stadium in Downtown Baltimore.
* A Black-Tie Reception from 7-10 PM on Saturday night at the Headquarters building.
These events are open to the public and all friends and supporters of Iota Phi Theta are welcome to attend.
In a related development, the Fraternity will also unveil a Nationwide community service initiative at the Saturday ceremony. In partnership with Microsoft Corporation and Africana.com, Iota Phi Theta will be making a substantial donation of educational materials and computer software to schools across the country. This program will spearhead the Fraternity's efforts to bridge the Digital Divide.
Iota Phi Theta is a Historically Black, national social-service fraternity whose objective is "The development and perpetuation of Scholarship, Leadership, Citizenship, Fidelity and Brotherhood among men." The Fraternity's motto is, "Building a Tradition, Not resting Upon One." Founded at Morgan State University on September 19, 1963, Iota Phi Theta consists of 180 chapters and over 17,000 members throughout the nation.
Notable members of the Fraternity include: Bobby Rush - United States Congressman, Spencer Christian - Former weather Anchor with "Good Morning America," T.C. Carson - Actor/Recording Artist, and Calvin Murphy, NBA Hall-of-fame. The fraternity is a member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), as well as the National Interfraternity Conference (NIC).
