I was looking for my Black Fact of the Day and came across this.
January 28th 1989
After 62 years, the Colgate-Palmolive Co. redesigned packaging for its "Darkie" tooth paste made and sold only in Asia. The nickname for Darkie tooth paste was renamed "Darlie" and the blackface sambo like character was changed into a "non-racially offensive" silhouette.

Garrett Morgan
1875-1963
Through trying to improve business, Morgan came across some of his finest invention. While trying to formulate a polish for sewing needles he discovered a way to straighten hair. His new Morgan Hair Refining Company became a huge financial success.

I remember this. In roughly 1988 to 1990, there was a widely reported run of insulting things against AfAms coming out of Japan.
