classes during bid day

okay so i'm rushing this upcoming week, and i'm so nervous and excited.

but i'm freaking out because i looked at the recruitment schedule and bid day is on a monday and i have a FULL class schedule on mondays.

i know i'm thinking too far ahead since i dont even know if i'll get a bid, but if i do, how do i accept it? and would they still let me have it even though i wont be able to participate in anything on that day? i'm super bummed about it. i cant believe i'd have to miss that day.

9/18/10 thanks everyone for your answers!
i posted an update. look at the later posts

Yes, you're thinking too far ahead. Bid day is often on a day of classes, and it's not like you're the only one in school! Chances are it will be late in the afternoon when most classes are out. I think mine was at something like 5 PM, but I can assure you that if you are in class during the Big Event, your new house will make sure you are welcomed in the best way available. Remember, they want you as much as you want them!

Relax, breathe, get plenty of sleep, drink plenty of water, think happy thoughts....

On my campus Bid Day is usually at 4:30 on Monday (the 13th this year) and yes, that does conflict with some classes. My advice would be to ask your recruitment counselors on the first night what the general protocol is. It can vary from campus to campus, and some professors are more Greek friendly than others. They'll be able to give you specific advice. As a freshman PNM I chose to miss my Monday class because I had three allowed unexcused absences for the semester, and I simply got the notes the next day from a classmate. Whether or not this is an option for you depends on the class of course.

You'll still get the bid if you miss class, don't worry about that.

This Monday is Labor Day, does your school hold classes that day? Our pref day/bid night is Monday and there are no classes that day.

She says she's rushing this upcoming week and today is Sunday so I'm thinking she means next Monday the 13th.

^yes that's what i meant. sorry i didnt clarify.

but okay thanks guys. i was worried that they'd take away your bid if dont show up.

i get out of class at 6pm on mondays, and bid day starts at noon is what the schedule says. how long do bid day events typically last? will i miss everything if i don't show up?

That very much depends on the campus. Again, talk to your recruitment counselors. If it were me I would miss the class I had during the main event (noon) and then explain to the sisters that I had to go back to classes if I felt I couldn't miss any others. Just see what your attendance policies are and what the schedule is in your classes (tests/quizzes) and if it's not possible to miss any on Monday, you'll still get your bid, you'll just miss the festivities.

And note: I do not advocate missing classes for sorority activities in general, I'm just suggesting it here because Bid Day is so memorable and exciting. But at the end of the day if you get a bid and can't attend you'll still have plenty of other memorable and exciting events to attend over the next 4 years.

You need to talk with your recruitment counselor or the Greek Life office. We don't know your campus so we can't say. And no, they are not allowed to take your bid away if you are in class. They will make arrangements but you have to talk with THEM, not us, to do that.

I know that won't take your bid away. My school does bids on Saturday, and last year when I pledged I had to be home on bids day to be at my Grandma's birthday party. I'm not sure how the Greek system is at your school (at mine it's not a super big deal) but I was able to hint that I was going to be home for a majority of the day.
It sounds like because it's a Monday sororities are used to new members not being available for their entire bids day. Have fun and don't stress about it!

My bid day was during the school week too. We went down to Greek life to accept our bids, but it was staggered throughout the day. We went when we weren't in class. We literally went into the Greek Life Advisors office (I think there were a couple of Rho Chis there as well) and opened our envelope in private. All of the fun wasn't until the night. Definitely talk to your Recruitment Counselor, because every school is different. (of course this was years ago)
