What Poems Helped You Make It?
Think back to your pledging days (or Intake if that was your entry) what was your favorite POEM? What inspired you most when the night was dark and the "situation" seemed most dim? During the terrifying, challenging journey toward Alpha, the choices were numerous "The House of Alpha" "Invictus" "The Man Who Thinks He Can" among others.
My favorite was Kipling's "If." I'd learned it years earlier as a child because I had to memorize and recite it for a church program. Not only did knowing it come in handy while pledging, its words were, and continue to be, a source of inspiration.
Bruhs? SistaFriends holla if you hear me on this...

It would get us "in trouble"....
But I really loved "He Ain't Heavy, He's my Brother", Bruh style.
My favorite lines were "...Each day of my life, I'll have blue skies 'cause I'm an Alpha (yes!!!!) from here on out!!!"
and
"...Even in cities of population 2, I'll even have a brother there!!!"
Just makes me wanna ....... all over again.

Bruh, I love Alpha poetry too (much of it recited with, shall we say "intense motivation") but ain't nuthin in the world that would make me wanna.....all over again.
"In the fell clutch of circumstance, I have not winced nor cried aloud,
but under the bludgeonings of chance my head is bloody but unbowed...."

Without a doubt, I'd say
If and Test of a Man. I knew a little of If while in high school and learned the entire poem just before I started college. A copy of it and Invictus and Test of a Man have been in my home or office longer than I can remember.

"Test of A Man"
My favorite line is "...with his head held high, Bleeding, Bruised, and Pale, is the man who will win..."
or
"To Be An Alphaman"
The part about "It calls for a lasting brotherhood. A word sometimes used in vain. It means a lasting devotion, not anticipation of personal gain."
As said earlier by another bruh, I LOVE ALPHA, but i will never do anything like that again.

I am not a member of the House of Alpha, but I felt compelled to respond to this thread.....
No doubt about this....
For me, it was all about "Am I My Brother's Keeper" and "Invictus".
What stood out from Am I My Brother's Keeper--
"We are as one, all for one, one for all--or none" and Invictus-- "I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul."

this takes me b-a-c-k!
when i pledged, the SIGMA poem "I am My Sister's Keeper" kept me inspired and reminded me of what the SIGMA is really all about: "...What she does, I do. What she knows, I know."
also, i have been in the bond for nearly four years and the song that still touches my heart is the one we sand the night my line came out:
"knew that i would live, knew that i would surely die, only to see the rhoyal blue light, and the golden SIGMA sun, shining bright..."

It would have to be "If" by Rudyard Kipling, "If you can keep your head when about you Are losing theirs blaming it on you..." this was nothing but the truth!!!! And of course, House of ALPHA, my favorite!
Can anyone still say "Invictus" by the time a match burns out???
