Question Anchor Slam?

I am a DG from San Jose, California - Gamma Eta Chapter. Recently our campus decided to refuse to let us do Anchor Splash anymore. We attempted to put together a golf tournament, but it looks as though it will fall through. I have heard that some DG chapters do Anchor Slam instead. I was wondering if anyone could tell me more about Anchor Slam?

We do Anchor slam and Anchor splash. Anchor slam is in the fall and Anchor splash is in the spring. I can't believe your campus won't let you girls have anchor splash!! That's awful!!! Anchor slam is just as fun for everyone though. Anchor slam is a basketball tournament. We get all the fraternities and sororities and any other clubs or organizations who would like to participate together and make brackets and have a basketball tournament. The tournament is single elimination (if I'm not mistaken) and I'm not sure how long the games are...but I think it may be like ten minutes a quarter. I can get back to you on exact details if you need me to. Anyway, each team is assigned a coach who is a DG and she is responsible for telling them how much money they need to pay to participate, informing them of the rules, and also cheering them on when they play!!! It is actually pretty easy putting things together. Another thing we do is make our Anchor slam shirts available for other teams to purchase. You can raise quiet a bit of money from that alone if you can find a place that will make them pretty cheap.
I hope this has helped you!! If you need more details just e-mail me!! Good luck!!
ITB, Rachel

Hi Rachel,
Indeed, while it is awful, I know that Anchor Splash is disappearing from the odd campus here and there because of liability issues.

University Administrators think of hundreds of fraternity and sorority members poolside and just get plain nervous as to whether their insurance policy would cover such an event or not. So...they're not doing it to be "mean", but rather, they're worried about getting sued, etc.

At least, that's how it was explained to me at the campus for my chapter! (i.e. That's why we have Anchor Slam, not Anchor Splash!)

I've also heard of hockey tournaments called "Anchor Freeze", too!!

Thanks for the input... I would love to know the details of Anchor Slam! Sounds like fun!

If anybody knows about anchor freeze or any other DG philanthropy, please let me know. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Hi....I am a at Chapman University. I am so sorry that your school will not let you do anchor slam. I recently just put on anchor slamat our school and it was a huge success. We raised over $5000 and it was so fun. If you want to email me you can @ princesgrl58@aol.com. Some schools do anchor slam in the spring and anchor splash in the fall. ALso you might want to try a best eyes fundraiser or something like that. If your chapter needs any help, please contact me and I will be so willing to help you.
Love ITB,
Lisa
