U. of Illinois Sanctions for Alcohol and Code of Conduct Violations (ZBT & Tri Delta)

As reported by a local newspaper:

http://www.news-gazette.com/news/loc...face_sanctions

The article sketches the background -- a party with an unwise theme, some questionable costumes, etc., resulting in protests.
Some of the sanctions:
*no recruitment in Spring 2007
* social probation

As far as reaction, the article quotes a Delta Delta Delta alumna adviser who seemed to be generally in agreement, with perhaps a reservation about one of the sanctions.

I thought they could not restrict an NPC chapter's right to recruit. Or is that only you can't punish recruitment violations with restricting recruitment.

at 185 members, i imagine that tri delta is over chapter total, so recruiting in the spring would be a moot point anyway.

You (school's Panhel you) can't punish rush violations with restricting rush. The most you can do is keep someone from participating in formal rush and even then, they can still recruit informally.

Also, this isn't coming down from Panhel, it's coming from a higher power, so I think that changes things as well.

I thought their formal recruitment was in the spring. Maybe I'm confusing schools though.

It's not so much that all theme parties can be offensive (ex. sleepover theme, star wars night, themed after a show/movie) but it's this particular one that is just blatantly stereotypical. Being Latina, and Mexican at that, I can find humor in it because Mexicans joke about it but it's a different story when an entire party is thrown to ridicule or mock situations most Americans don't bother to learn about. Not every Mexican came here illegally, cuts grass or has seven babies. Perhaps better judgement should have been used.

I actually don't think there's anything wrong with the theme of the party..."Tacos and Tequila." It's the way the members interpreted it that caused the problem. It could have just been a fiesta with Mexican food, beer and whatnot, but instead some members decided to use it as an opportunity to insult a demographic. I just don't understand how/why some people come up with ideas like that...I can't imagine most people hear of a "Tacos and Tequila" party and think, "Perfect! I'm going to come dressed up as a poor, pregnant Mexican woman!" It's just odd thinking.
