Duke Univ. Sororities

Recently an acquaintance whose daughter will be attending Duke University this fall asked me which was the “best” sorority at DU. As I am completely unfamiliar with the social sororities at Duke I need some help from y’all! Specifically I would like to know which are the leading NPC sororities in the following areas: academics; philanthropies; school spirit; social involvement. I would really prefer to know who leads in those areas based on results from Panhellinic Council rankings and various awards given in the above areas if possible, but informed opinions and (fact based) reputations would be useful as well. I don’t want to get into a situation of criticizing individual chapters either, only positives please. As we all know, each chapter is different and special in its own way (sisterhood can’t be graphed on a chart) and this young lady must find the chapter that she truly clicks with, not necessarily the one with the most trophies on the mantle. Thank you for your help!

Here's the website for clubs at Duke: http://www.duke.edu/org/org.html

they include:

Alpha Delta Pi
Alpha Epsilon Phi
Alpha Omicron Pi
Alpha Phi
Chi Omega
Delta Gamma
Delta Sigma Theta
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Sigma Gamma Rho
Zeta Phi Beta

There were others but these were the ones I recognized as being sororities. There were a couple special-interest organizations as well.

When it comes down to it, the best sorority is going to be the best sorority for HER. Encourage her to give each organization a chance, and go with where she feels most comfortable. That's the sorority where she'll do the most good, feel most involved, and get the most from.

I don't think anyone would be comfortable saying which sorority was "best" at Duke University, especially this close to rush. I personally only know the reputation of my own. I'd suggest you go to the greek life page and see if they have an Order of Omega page... that will show the awards that they have won. My best advice to your daughter is for her to go through rush with an open mind... she'll be able to figure out just through rush which sororities are known for which things, and if they've received a lot of awards I'm sure they will tell her that. I'm sorry I can't help you more... but I'm biased, as you can see!

THAT is good advice.

Note to the uninitiated: Order of Omega is the honor organization for greeks.

During rush, sorority members may not promote their own organization -- they must encourage rushees to give each sorority on campus a fair chance. (This is why CarolinaDG is being so careful about what she says -- she's trying hard to play fair.)

Definately suggest that your friend's daughter go through formal rush, where she will get the opportunity to spend time with each group.

Panhellenic at Duke:
Alpha Delta Pi http://www.duke.edu/~lbs4/adpi/menu.htm

Alpha Epsilon Phi http://www.duke.edu/web/AEPhi/

Alpha Phi http://www.duke.edu/web/aphi/

Alpha Omicron Pi http://www.duke.edu/web/aoii/

Chi Omega http://www.duke.edu/web/chiomega/index.html

Delta Delta Delta

Delta Gamma http://www.duke.edu/web/deltagamma/

Kappa Alpha Theta http://www.duke.edu/web/katheta/

Kappa Kappa Gamma http://www.duke.edu/web/KKG/

Pi Beta Phi http://www.duke.edu/web/piphi/

The panhellenic website is down... All I can tell you is that it appears that most chapters are between 110-150+ members... I can also tell you that Pi Phi had 163 members after recruitment last year. I think there is someone on this board that is a Greek member at Duke.

The website listed under alpha omega pi is actually for the Duke chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi. Just so that there is no confusion! Good luck with recruitment. An open mind and open heart is the best way to find out what group is best for you! We wish your daughter the best.

Not anymore. She decided that Duke wasn't the school for her, so she's taking some time off from college right now.
