Thumbs down Gamma Sig Haters

Hey sorors,

We are really having some haters of Gamma Sigma Sigma on our campus. We are a new colony at Francis Marion University and we have our share of haters. First of all it is like this I am a member of a social sorority (ZphiB) as well as Gamma Sig and my sorors as well as others don't have a problem with Gamma Sig except for the ladies of crimson and cream. Regardless of the fact that a member of this sorority is one of the founding members of the colony, they seem to have a problem with our organization party hopping, chanting, doing our call, and throwing up our sign. They feel that if we are not a social organization then why should we do what social organizations do. Personally I feel that they are just hating, because if all of our ideals are based on communtiy service why is party hopping and chanting such a big issue to them. Seems to me that they need to get their founding principles in order. I just wanted to know how other organizations see Gamma Sig on your campuses and how you are treated as an organiztion (respected, dissed, hated on, etc).

P.S. I think they are just mad because they are not the larges sorority on the yard anymore (Gamma Sig has 47 charter members).

Welcome to GC Soror!! It's always nice to have another Gamma Sig in the building and I hope things are well at FMU.

To address your post: I don't like to look at it as "hating". Hate is a strong word. I just look at it as people who don't understand what we're about. Yes, we are a sorority based on SERVICE, but we like to have our fun too. And that's just like any other GLO on the yard. Plus, you guys are new and that's just what comes with being new. You just keep doing what ya'll do, and it will pass.

I was a charter member of my chapter (Zeta Tau) and we went through the same things ya'll are, and lots of other GSS chapters have too. Just conduct yourselves as the ladies I know you are, keep the service on point and most importantly have pride in Gamma Sig. People will notice! And if folks still have something to say, look at it as free publicity as they are taking the time out to even mention Gamma Sig

Hey soror! Nice to see someone on here from FMU. I am from Florence, SC as well. I will be home during the holidays and all. I hope that things are well at FMU. My chapter has some haters too at Johnson C. Smith University, but remember to know this and keep it in mind that people fear what they know nothing about. If it is something new to them, they are not used to it so they get frightened and do not know how to take it.

Shout out to the ladies of GSS from FMU! I met some of you all the weekend of the ATL game (TSU & FAMU). I haven't ran across this with the GSS at our campus, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I have had several people tell me my frat wasn't real, I didn't pledge, etc. At the same time, I have had mad greeks show me love. I agree with gammagirl (the wonderful #7), it's just ignorance...when you know better you do better. If you can educate people, hopefully they can get with the program, but you don't have to "prove yourself" to anyone. I see that a lot with some members of APO & GSS. Some people wanna be NPHC so bad that they try to make our orgs like it...others want that validity so bad that they make a fool of themselves trying to achieve it. Good luck. I'm sure as the year runs it course, and the campus sees what you all are about, some of the drama will calm down.

Congrats on being chartered on the campus. All I have to say is keep your head up because this is something that we have all gone through. There will always be people who have a problem with you and what you stand for, but don't let that get to you. No matter what they say do what you do and do it to the best of your ability. That way there is nothing they can do but give you props. Keep smiling, stepping, hopping, and chanting. Kill them with kindness....they hate it.......Hang in there soror.....WEEEEE-OOOOOOOP

I agree with all of the above, some people just don't understand Gamma Sig... we're a little bit of everything... we're not confined to a certain race or certain 'requirements'... we have a higher standard of unity through service. People here at the Texas State University, Gamma Chi Chapter, are always asking who who we are, are we 'greek' and what makes us different. I think it's our standards and ability to be self confident without someone else 'accepting' us. Bottom line, brush it off and keep doin what ya doin.

While a member-in-training and a sister, many people told me that we were not a "real" sorority. The way I see it, you cannot get any more real than non-discrimination and a purpose to serve.

hello sorors,
Yeah we get that alot here at Delta Chi. I am Black but Missouri State only has 800 black students out of 19,100. So since I am really into my sorority alot of NPHC people get offended like we are in their territory but the way I see it we do what we say we do friendship, equality, service, and plenty of smiles, which is alot more than I can say for most of them. Take pride in the fact that you stick to your guns and keep your head up Soror!!!!

I understand completely, soror! As an alumni member of the Gamma Theta Chapter at SFA, we had haters as well. People think we're not a real sorority, and when we say we're a National Service Sorority, they're quick to jump to offense and say, "We do service too!"
And then where I mentor high school students, all they talk about is how they want to be a part of a Greek frat/sorority and have no reasoning behind it. Not that I'm knocking the Black Greeks...but it's funny when the kids ask me what sorority I'm in and I tell them, and they like "who are they? they must not be important because I've never heard of them!" I'm like whoa...step on another campus and say that and watch you get told! lol but there's ignorance everywhere! You know who you are...that's all that matters! :-)
