Sigma Kappa Parents' Club

Hiello Sigma Kappas,
I am the proud parent of two collegiate members of Sigma Kappa -- both in the same chapter. My oldest daughter has expressed an interest in me organizing a Parents' Club for her chapter. They don't seem to have a very strong SK alumnae base in the near vicinity of the university and she thinks moms and dads may be willing to help out with things like the scut work associated with recruitment (last year I ironed table cloths until the wee hours of the morning before pref day) and whatever else we may do to help out with. I checked the SK national website and it memtions the club as an opportunity for socialization with other parents (we live four hours away from their campus) and for opportunities to lend the chapter a hand with various things. I just wanted to ask if any of you have had any experience with parents' clubs -- was it a good thing and how did they help out your chapter? Thanks!!

My chapter didn't have a parents club while I was there, but they are trying to form one now. It seems like a great way for parents to see the great things their daughters do while members of Sigma Kappa. I know a lot of parents were afraid of their daughters living in the chapter house or joining a sorority in general, and that was often helped by our parents day events where we showed them the house and talked about all the great things we do on campus.

I think its a great idea for you to help set up a parents club. The chapter members would benefit from the help and I'm sure parents would be happy to have other parents to share concerns with or talk to.

Our parents club is SUCH a help. If you contact the VPAR (Vice Prez of Alumnae Relations) for the chapter, her officer notebook from NHQ has info on starting a parents club.

We have a moms weekend and a dads weekend (same weekend as the uni does theres) and the parents club holds fund raisers (like a basket auction or poker) and uses the funds to buy us things we need (like a vacuum).

If you have any questions, PM me. I'm VPAR of my chapter, and have worked with our Parents Club a lot (both as VPAR and house manager).

Thanks for the help. I think it is something that would be very valuable to pursue!
