UGA: Gunshot Fired -- "Altercation" between Tau Kappa Epsilon and Pi Kappa ALpha

UGA: Gunshot Fired -- "Altercation" between Tau Kappa Epsilon and Pi Kappa ALpha

Hello, LaneSig and others,
This recent story, unfortunately, is not likely to improve the public image of fraternities.

Excerpt – in quotes – from article ^^:

“A gun was fired on the University of Georgia campus early Sunday morning during an altercation between two UGA fraternities.

No one was injured during the altercation between members of the Pi Kappa Alpha and Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternities . . . .”

Please see the article for more information; police have identified the shooter. The gun was reportedly fired from the Teke house. Reportedly the gun was fired into the air, although before the shot was fired, the gun had been pointed at members of the "rival" fraternity.

(Also: the article happens to use the term "frat." But, ahem, you know, it probably isn't the right time to object to the word as being disparaging.)

My daughter, a UGA employee and alum, got an all-campus alert about this right after it happened. She hopes that they won't be minus one more fraternity very soon.

The article on the Augusta Chronicle’s site names the alleged shooter – Gregory John O’Brien. Charges include “aggravated assault,” “reckless conduct,” and ”possession of a weapon on school grounds. “

Reportedly, police “seized a .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol when searching the Tau Kappa Epsilon house.”

I can't believe it was the chapter president who brandished the gun and fired. Now he has a bunch of felonies to deal with. He's lucky nobody was killed.

Xidelt, it was hard for me to believe, too. I saw a sort of gossipy statement somewhere, but didn't believe it until I saw the UGA student paper's article:

Update:
The young man who allegedly brandished a gun and fired a shot has reportedly moved out of the TKE house, has been suspended by TKE HQ, and the chapter is in the process of rescinding his fraternity membership. See details:
