Unhappy chapters that are closing/opening

This is from the National web page:

Delta Nu Chapter, Michigan State University
Gamma Lambda Chapter, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill
Zeta Iota Chapter, North Dakota State University

At the end of this spring semester, these chapters will cease operations. I do not know reasons However, i am thrilled to report that Phi Mu will be colonizing at Miami University of Ohio!

It's sad that we are losing some of our chapters. However, I'm sure there are good reasons because I don't believe our national would pull them for any dumb reason.

Thats really sad....its always a shame to loose chapter, but hopefully it will lead the way to colonize other chapters at other schools...
What happens to the sisters of those chapters that get closed? do they automatically 3D even if they arent graduating??

I'm not sure how many years ago Miami's chapter was closed, but I do know that Phi Mu and another sorority had presented. Phi Mu was chosen, and BH is going to reopen.

MoonStar poses a good question... does anyone know the answer?

I am almost certain that when a chapter closes all members gain alumnae status.

I seriously dont get it!!!
I took a look at the webpages for the chapters that were closed..and they looked like well organized HUGE chapters!!!
If you go and read the involvement lists they are lonnng and it seems that all three of these chapters have done a very good job making a name for themselves on campus!!
Compared to my school...which is a commuter school we dont have nearly as many girls as they do..we cap at 75...
Its sooo sad... and what happens to their house? can they still live in it?
Its not fair! I would hope that nationals and the chapters involved didnt go down without a fight..its so sad to see us loose chapters especially in this very special year in Phi Mu history
Does anyone know what happened there???

hmmm

I do not know details for ND State or Michigan State. However, I was in contact with a Phi Mu from Chapel Hill and she said that they had been struggling for a year with numbers. They only had 90 in Fall of 2001 when total was almost 200. They were going to lose a large number of their chapter to graduation in May. They and Delta Zeta were the smallest on campus. They were very stressed out with doing COB and as a chapter whole voted to close their chapter. They will lose the house. They are planning on coming back to campus in a few years. Meanwhile because Chapel Hill has a huge rush, there is talk of another sorority presenting to colonize on campus. That is all I know.

What I don't understand is how you can invite new chapters to campus when other chapters (in general...not just Phi Mu) are struggling. I guess it's the whole getting stuck with one reputation/image and not being able to pull out of a downward spiral. I honestly think that other chapters do not understand the effects of a chapter on their campus closing. Not saying that all sisterhoods aren't wonderful, but strictly "image" speaking some house is always going to be the "bottom" house. When that happens their numbers over time are going to slip and possibly lead to another closed chapter. And so the cycle continues....Those who were once "middle tier" houses slip to the bottom and struggle and fight to keep their houses open.
I'm all for competitive spirit and wanting "my house" to be the best but unless chapters on campus are willing to support each other when they're struggling things aren't going to change. And let's be frank here....every campus has a house that's not doing well at all. How many people really take a proactive approach in giving them assistance? Maybe a rep. from the Panhellenic exec. will show up to an event and make an appearance but that's pretty much it. I'm not saying this is right, so please don't flame me, but it's really something to think about. (And if someone has taken steps to help out a struggling chapter other than their own, please share and tell us what you did)

I am just impressed that your nationals is up-front enough to tell ya'll when a chapter is closing. We just find out a chapter is closed when we realized we haven't heard about it in a while ... no formal announcement is ever made.

I realize the details of why a chapter is closed maybe shouldn't be made public, but the simple fact of the closing shouldn't be secret. Otherwise you keep hearing about new openings but wondering why the total number of chapters isn't getting any higher ...

Their website may be well organized, but their behavior was extremely unbefitting of a Phi Mu. I don't want to get into details (which I do know about MSU). I feel horrible that they have to get shut down, but after I heard what had happened I felt that it was a good idea. I feel sorry for the innocent sisters, but Phi Mu stands as a chapter, and not individually when there are numerous problems. I don't think some of the girls will get alum status, but I don't think I'm at liberty to discuss in detail what I've heard. Possibly have your presidents or advisors check with National for me details.

Nu Chapter

My sorority is going national and we've decided to affiliate with Phi Mu!!!

We are re-opening the Nu chapter here in XYZ, Georgia, that was here in the EARLY 1900s!

So this single letter stuff is pretty awesome huh?

Unhappy Delta Delta

I'm very sad to have to say that my and Phimugirlie01's chapter, Delta Delta , will be closing at the end of the spring quarter. We have been struggling with numbers for sometime (we currently have 48 members and campus total is at 135) and we voted in January to close at the end of the year.

It's such a relief to finally post the news. I've been wanting to tell you all for some time but it wasn't announced until this past Tuesday. We will all be gaining alumnae status at this time.

Delta Delta is tentatively scheduled to recolonize in Fall of 2004.

Oh, that is sad. I met a lot of Delta Deltas at the Area I Leadership Conference a few years ago.
